It wasn't unlike Fey's first appearance as Palin, where she flat-out quoted her. That was basically Biden's answer to gay marriage.

Quality, quality stuff; this follows SNL's pattern for the last dozen or so years, they're actually good once every four years.

I think it's specifically because they have Jim Downey to write their political stuff during election season, which is what seperates the quality from the rest of the show. (Downey was also the primary WU writer during McDonald's time.)
