Steve Miller's songs are truly timeless. Before I knew better, I thought "The Joker" was written in the early 90s because it could be played alongside Spin Doctors and Counting Crows and not sound at all dated.

There are very few songs out there whose sound transcends the time in which it was recorded, and Steve Miller Band managed to produce more than one. That's just amazing.

Actually, I thought he did explain it... He misunderstood an old blues singer lyric.

Forty-Two: I thought "The Joker" was written in the early 90s because it could be played alongside Spin Doctors [snip]

Miller's commented a few times on the similarities between the Spin Doctors' "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" and his "Take the Money And Run".

Sheryl Crow also nicks parts of that song for her "Steve McQueen".

His earlier albums are pretty damn great too, especially Children of the Future.

Steve Miller never explains that he stole the made up word from an earlier blues song. Might be why he doesn't know what it means.

Another red lit posting had a link to The Straight Dope's "In Steve Miller's 'The Joker',what is the 'pompatus of love'?.

It's kind of bizarre, actually. Originally 'puppetutes", it's a Kim Cattrall in "Mannequin" kind of thing.

Love me some Steve Miller music. The fact that Madonna made it in to the HOF and Steve has not is one of life's tragedies/mysteries

Mega_Doof 2008-10-05 03:28:56 PM
Those few times I've sung this in a cover band I just sing "prophetess of love" which makes more sense than a made-up word pronounced "pompitous."

His last pretty good record; everything after this was truly shiat.

He's a hack tho' and admits it; said in Rolling Stone that he stole every lick he's ever played.

Look up the lyrics for John Mellencamp's "Play Guitar" sometime and read the last verse.

That's the only concert I ever walked out of. Awful.

I think he was too farked up to play. Thorogood was the opening act and completely upstaged the headliner in every way.
