When religion strikes, it is God's plan.

Relatively Obscure [TotalFark] 2008-10-04 10:09:10 PM
Sigh.

darkhorse23 [TotalFark] 2008-10-04 10:34:34 PM
I used to argue with my daughter's friend's mother about this; they were that way too.

I said that if God is all powerful and created this world, then he created doctors as well, and gave them the brains to learn how to cure people. And that is God's will too.

She would just laugh and shake her head like I was a stupid 5 year old who didn't understand.

That was so sad.

xlbrooklyn [TotalFark] 2008-10-04 10:37:13 PM
I don't know that they'll be found guilty of what they're charged with. Last time I checked, refusing medical treatment on religious grounds was still legal, even if it isn't humane. Or logical. Or normal.

darkhorse23: She would just laugh and shake her head like I was a stupid 5 year old who didn't understand.

I would have, too. Clearly, doctors and their ilk are a product of the devil, sent here to deceive you into sinful ways of doing and believing and acting contrary to God's divine will. If you can't tell the difference between things that are of the Devil and things that are of God, then you obviously need more education. In brainwashing class Sunday School.

It's really going to come down to whether or not the son consented to ignoring medical treatment. If so, then he's exercising his freedom to be incredibly stupid in the name of religion. If not, then it's clear neglect.

xlbrooklyn [TotalFark] 2008-10-04 10:48:51 PM
Occam's Chainsaw: whether or not the son consented to ignoring medical treatment.

I'm not convinced of that, either. Minors don't have the right of consent or of refusal. It wasn't like he was 18 and empowered to override his parents' decisions legally.

Idiots like that should be used for medical experiments.

Why is this so bad? One less little fundie growing up to be a big fundie!

If only every religious family would let their genetics die out and the plague that is their ideals die out also.

They need to be put to death. Religion like that is a disease in and of itself.

Yup. Prayer alsways seems to work

I'd say they were Mormons, but most likely just dirtbags who will use religion as an excuse.

No, Minors can not make any decision on treatment either way. In an emergency room, in a life or death situation, the parents would have most likely been arrested had they refused life or death treatment.

"Horribly guilty?" I hope they're clued in enough to feel regret, remorse, perhaps even shame, because they're looking at years in prison for their foolishness. Whatever happened to "God helps those who help themselves?"

Murderers. Plain and simple. I hope the pain of losing a loved one bears so heavily on their souls that their stupid religion becomes worthless.

We haven't evolved as a species. Just because you have a computer in the next room you're still worshipping imaginary things.

Did you know that the Mormons are converting everyone on earth to mormonism? That's why they have such awesome genealogical records. You may already be one yourself.

Probably a Doctor visit and some antibiotics would have worked better.
It is not a religious thing, it is a crazy thing.

Magnanimous_J 2008-10-04 11:00:44 PM
Now as a rational person, I believe all religions are pretty dumb. However, Mormanism and Scientology battle it out for the title of Stupidest shiat people believe.

Honestly, my Mormon friends, your religion is idiotic, and you are stupid for believing in it.

equusdc 2008-10-04 11:01:04 PM
It wasn't like he was 18 and empowered to override his parents' decisions legally.

When it comes to "uhm, mom, please let them give me a $5 antibiotic so I don't drop dead," I figure the parents can rot awhile for involuntary manslaughter in some shiathole prison where they'll have nothing else to do but exercise their freedom of religion freed of any further opportunity to procreate.

They need to DIAF. Or stuff something up thier pepee hole, and then don't give them treatment. But..feel free to stand by the bed and pray while they die in agony.

xlbrooklyn: I'm not convinced of that, either. Minors don't have the right of consent or of refusal. It wasn't like he was 18 and empowered to override his parents' decisions legally.

No, but if he was old enough, his testimony would've been solicited before a court would've ordered his parents' decision overturned. If his belief structure truly rejected seeking medical attention, brainwashed as he might be, then it would really come down to what courtroom he was sitting in, but the more constitutional answer would be to let them do as they will.

Dr Emilio Lizardo 2008-10-04 11:03:04 PM
xlbrooklyn: I don't know that they'll be found guilty of what they're charged with. Last time I checked, refusing medical treatment on religious grounds was still legal, even if it isn't humane. Or logical. Or normal.

It depends on the state. In most states, if the child is a minor then legally they have not had an opportunity to make the decision on religion and foregoing medical care. They can neither give nor withhold consent. In that case, a pediatrician can take temporary legal custody under the right circumstances and administer caresuch as with a life or death or permanent disability issue.

/Not a lawyer, not a pediatrician.

They farking won't, and it really pisses me off. They'll argue their right to do such an abominable thing, and they'll portray themselves as martyrs doing battle with the evil secular government.

I don't want to go on a complete rant here (and I'm not a troll) but this kind of thing makes me so incredibly angry that I can barely contain myself.

These religious nutjobs that hold these asinine beliefs--God will heal my child by the power of prayer--are ignorant and dangerous! The parents should be charged with homicide and held accountable.

What really makes me angry (and terrified) is that there are people in government (or who aspire to be in government) that believe similar things (I'm talking about you: Sarah Palin).

It's one thing for these people to kill themselves but to kill their children (or perhaps me by forcing their fantasy land beliefs on me via the government) is something that should scare the shait out of you.

God's will? Yeah, fark that.

I expect that God is as pissed off as I am.
