The last horribly tasteless headline about a suicide had the redeeming quality of being funny and clever. This one... not so much.

I don't think he'll give a shiat.

Cops have been eating their guns for a hundred years, douchebagmitter. Read some Joseph Wambaugh.

I thought this was going to be about the news from two days ago, in which the NYPD officer who ordered the tasering committed suicide.

Apparently it's just a shiatty headline about a different officer committing suicide.

This is weak. Cop suicides happen at a rate of 35 x that of people in other occupations, and the main cause of cop suicide is domestic issues.

Yawn. If anything, this should have gotten a "sad" tag.

I will be the first to say there are some bad cops out there, but at the same time it is a stressful job.

Their job's difficulty is compounded by an industry that wants desperately to militarize them for profits and bureaucrats that play both sides of the fence given the election winds of the time.

The police have been separated from the people they are swarn to protect, and unfortunately that is the first step towards military dictatorship and/or fascism.

The police are put in the unenviable position of protecting the status quo. Unfortunately the hiring practices tend to favor those who lean towards authoritarianism. It is becoming built into the system at an accelerated rate.

Those who are conflicted or those who can't manage their professional lives and home lives turn to domestic violence, suicide, or corruption.

umm.... what?

Hey, I've got an idea. Let's create a job where you sleep for half of your shift, and barbecue the other half, then ride around in your big gay fire truck and try to look important.

Cops put it on the line EVERY DAY.

While I do feel a little bitter that the fire department is a good bit more relaxed than us, I will never put a fireman down. It's good to know that no matter what happens to me they will be there for me.
And the same goes for them.

For all of you who seem to hate police but praise firemen, the firemen would be disgusted with you.

Well to be fair, I've never had my face smacked into the hood of a car while in handcuffs by a fireman.

just saying.

On the other hand, when my idiot friend Kip handcuffed himself to a rail in the elevator of the dorms, the fire dept DID come and cut him out. And then they laughed and laughed.

Yes, often hassling & roughing up non-violent drug offenders and other victimless vice criminals.

If cops spent half the time chasing real crime as they do kicking down doors & abusing the rights of citizens because they might be in possession of an illegal plant (*gasp!*) we might actually see our society become a safer, more pleasant, place to live.

I spend the majority of my shift either taking pointless reports for someone screaming "My baby momma ______" or "Someone shot/stabbed/jumped me, and I know who it is but I don't want to say who it was."
And the other half is usually CHASING(OMG WTF I THOUGHT WE DIDN'T DO THIS?) after some farking crackhead broke into someones home or stole their air conditioner. But hey, they aren't being violent(until we catch them), just thieves stealing from decent citizens. That makes it okay, right?

So yeah, I will arrest these "non-violent" drug users. I've never run across one who isn't doing something else illegal. Mind you that does not pertain to people using recreational drugs, though I don't think people should do those, either.

JamesLi: And the other half is usually CHASING(OMG WTF I THOUGHT WE DIDN'T DO THIS?) after some farking crackhead broke into someones home or stole their air conditioner.

The other day here in Seattle, they had some drug bust right in front of my building so I had a front row seat. There were two dudes on the ground and about 20 cops, with the AR's and shotguns out. I couldn't help notice how HAPPY the cops looked. Like a cat when it brings in a dead bird.

One of my co-workers asked "Why do they need so many guys for that?" and I said "These cops are so bored that when the call came to do something cool, they all wanted in."

Is that true? Most of the time I see cops on patrol, they just look angry and bored.

I don't hate cops, I just wish you would spend more time solving crimes and less time being tax collectors with guns.

Oh, and I still don't forgive Tacoma PD for beating the hell out of me when I was 20.

Theft is a real crime, with real victims. I never said that was okay. I'm talking about "crimes" of consent. Soft drugs, prostitution, and gambling where nobody is being victimized and all those participating are doing so of their own free will.

Marijauna is illegal because it's a soft target that is extremely plentiful.

It's easy, too easy, for a local police force to make a bust of some grow operation, and make the announcement to the press; "Hey, we just took a million bucks worth of weed off the street!", get their photo in the paper, and justify their taxpayer funded budget to fight "The War on Drugs".

Meanwhile, that bust did absolutely nothing to even make a dent in what is the Number One Cash Crop in America. (new window) A 35 Billion Dollar Industry that is totally untaxed, and with all the proceeds going into organized crime organizations.

This must be a new usage of "put it on the line" that I'm not familiar with, one that involves hassling innocent civilians because you're too chicken to go after real criminals.

fark the police. Given the face of law enforcement today, the fewer of them there are, the better.

People don't respect the police because the behavior of far too many of them garners anything but respect. The rest of the cops don't get much respect either due to their assent/acquiescence/silence on the issue of the scumbags among them.

We may need cops, but we don't need many of ones we have now. Criticizing the behavior of the police and/or calling for reform is not the same as calling for the abolition of police departments.

One of the things that annoy me greatly is that I'm an individualist anarchist at heart, but I realize that it won't work because people (as a whole) are jackasses. So, we need people to enforce the law.

Now, the thing that annoys me is how many instances we get of LEOs abusing their power. Furthermore, most cops I have had the displeasure of meeting were total jerks. I realize that there must be 'good' (to use a rather generic term) cops out there, but I have yet to meet one. And that colours my view quite a bit.
