This pink ribbon crap is getting waaaaay out of control. It's no longer about fundraising and awareness, it's about marketing.

Ask a woman what the most common killer of women is. If she answers "Breast cancer" then she's wrong.

It's actually heart disease. Heart disease kills almost three times as many women each year as breast cancer, but all of the media around breast cancer awareness month overshadows that fact.

Guys get breast cancer too. Guys also get prostate cancer, which apparently, isn't funded nearly as well as breast cancer research.

Why, if women could get prostate cancer, my guess is it would be funded as highly as breast cancer.

It began because 15-20 years ago, breast cancer was very underfunded and researched, because women and their health problems didn't matter much to the (mostly male) people who did the funding and research. Now the pendulum has swung almost too fat in the other direction, I suspect because women like to buy pink things.

I get sick of hearing women complaining about how much men stare at their breasts, or how their breasts are considered as even an attribute to who they are as a person. Um, ladies, did you know that breast cancer research gets 15 times more funding than prostate cancer. Which means we care 15 times more about you, than ourselves. Choke on that next time you even think about objecting to a wet t-shirt contest, you ungrateful whores.

You know, Heretic, 15-20 years ago many types of cancer were underfunded and under-researched. But with the many discoveries made since then in the genetic construction of cancer cells and the many advances in treatment options, survival rates are climbing among many types of cancer. Why is everything a sexism issue with you?

How about you go to your local childrens' hospital and explain to the cancer patients there why breast cancer is more important to cure than leukemia or bone cancer.

Breast cancer has one of the highest survival rates when caught early. I'm guessing since not many children survive leukemia and other cancers, there aren't a lot of survivors around to be obnoxious spokes-people dedicated to fund-raising (a.k.a. raking in money on the plight of victims).

You are right on one point, the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. I know a number of people who are sick of the constant, in-your-face marketing of the breast cancer lobby, women included. Its obtrusive presence has started the discussions about why one disease is more important than another. The answer is invariably, "It's all about money."

For me, this answer applies indiscriminately across the realm of "causes" and "ribbons."

"WHO? Who won't wear the rrrribbon?"

bssrf4 2008-10-04 10:24:35 PM
You know, I can't think of anyone who isn't already aware of breast cancer.

RoyBatty 2008-10-04 10:26:04 PM
because women and their health problems didn't matter much to the (mostly male) people who did the funding and research.

Statements that it was underfunded is one thing, condemnatory statements it's because men hate women is just a bullshiat approach to take.

Ya know who does some of the most breast cancer research for women? The US Army.

I believe I already did- a backlash against what was once an arguably underfunded, and now is the celebrity of cancers. An alternate explanation would cover both the breast cancer and their illness- sometimes things just aren't fair. Do not for a moment think this means I care about breast cancer, or sick kids and their problems.

In my experience, most women will answer breast cancer. But lung cancer kills more women than breast cancer. There's not a tenth of the effort to help women stop smoking. And yet for all the pink ribbon awareness and the constant early detection yammering, the breast cancer mortality rate remains unchanged.

Glad to hear others are sick of the pink ribbon campaigns. And I had breast cancer. It's become nothing but a marketing ploy to lure the consumer into spending money to give people a feel good minute.

We do this at the salon I work at. I don't see how it's stupid at all. People get a few cute hot pink strands in their hair for a donation to a good cause. Seems like a win-win for me. The salon donates all of the money they get taking a loss for the stylist's time and the cost of the hair. I think it's a fun way to raise a little cash actually. I have a few in right now. Plus, it's really quite amusing when like 80 year old conservative ladies get a few put in

True, but what your not told is women typically get heart disease long after their husbands have died as women typically live longer. A better assessment would be old age is the number one killer of women. Let's face it, no one can live forever.

Here are some other facts about cancer that goes mostly ignored. Men get breast cancer, except it's much more deadly as men have little breast tissue. Men are more likely to get prostate cancer than a women is get breast cancer.

Can anyone answer me this. Why does the US have a department of women's health but no mens department of health when women typically live longer than men? Since prostate cancer is more prevalent that breast cancer, why doesn't it receive the same concern?
