The thing is, though, there are all SORTS of free outdoor gyms in Korea. They're scattered everywhere on the mountains, too; pullup bars, swivel discs, ladders, etc. Parks are quite common.

The winters certainly suck and make such parks inaccessible, but still, there's a huge infrastructure.

As if nobody bothered to note, it is none of the government's goddam business if people want to eat and get fat.

Send Hitlery Clitless over there, she needs something to do.

And we are tired of her, that's for sure.

From the people I know who spend time in Seoul, this is, unfortunately, very true.

However, if I was living in a three room apartment with my family I would want to GTFO as much as possible.

If they can't get the kids to go outside for free what makes them think they'll get the kids to go across town for free?

More to the point, this seems like a bad investment as South Korea's birthrate is even farther below the replacement rate than Japan's. There aren't going to be any children to use them.

Well I guess they could play Starcraft outside with long enough power cords.

I'm a English teacher in South Korea (Suwon) right now, so I'm getting a kick, etc, etc.

The number of overweight kids here is easily below what you can see in North America, but I still have plenty of fat little porkers running in some of my classes. The Korean education system actually takes physical fitness quite seriously, with the focus being more on improving your own physical fitness rather then being told to find a partner and pretend to play some game you don't care about for an hour each other day. It's something I wish more North American schools did.

And yeah, I many of the larger and older neighbourhoods, 'outside' doesn't really exist. Newer neighbourhoods are a little better because they're usually planned with a park and other green space in mind though.

/Don't cross the street here without first looking both ways and praying to the deity of your choice.

Seeing that all the boys are going to have to be in shape when they do their conscript service, it's best to get a more kind head start or face the beatings and other motivational exercises (such as forced feeding of feces) when they get to military training.

On the other hand, girls get to go to college immediately after high school if they have the aptitude for it. It makes for an interesting social climate at the post-secondary education level when the school environment is geared more towards female students since they generally get a 3-year had start compared to their male counterparts.

/one small positive facet to the generally strong undercurrent of 1950's-esque views of women's rights in South Korea

If you let the kids on the sidewalks a psychopathic pizza delivery moped would mow them down in the blink of the eye.

Yes, subby, because monkey bars and slides are perfectly equivalent to good gym equipment.

I'm in South Korea right now, and trust me, even outside Seoul, there is no outside here. I'm in a "Small town" and I wouldn't let my kids play outside in this city. They'd be dead in 20 min.

I'm living in South Korea and where there aren't skyscrapers you will only find mountains, so some sort of public gym program sounds like a good idea.

The children here are tiny compared to the tikes back home however. Does anyone have the McDonald's kid handy?
