How good can a haircut realistically be? Three figures? WTF?

Hells, even a blow-job doesn't cost that much. Usually. And you don't get tea with that either.

mine cost 12 dollars, and it comes out just as good.

pdieten 2008-10-04 06:58:02 PM
As if the local salon is such a good deal. Mrs. pdieten just dropped a C-note on a cut and color (including tip.) Seems pretty luxurious to me.

AR55 2008-10-04 06:58:15 PM
I pay my barber $20 (tip included) to cut my hair every 2 months. I can't imagine paying any more than that. Jesus Christ I can't believe people are this stupid with money.

Unsung_Hero 2008-10-04 06:58:26 PM
Women who pay that kind of money make a big deal out of it - they'll chase a particular hairdresser around like they're God or something.

It's a freaking haircut. There are good ones and bad ones, but somehow I doubt there is a difference between a $40 haircut and a $100 haircut.

Between $10 and $40 can be a huge difference - my kid gets $10 haircuts, I get $20, the wife gets $40.

clambam 2008-10-04 07:01:05 PM
This is bad news. Our entire economy is based on the willingness of women to pay three times as much as men do for stuff while working for only three quarters the pay. Men's haircut at a high end barbershop: 20 bucks tops. Women's haircut at a low end salon: 60 bucks minimum. Men's underwear: 3 for five dollars. Women's underwear: I don't know (what do you think I am, some kind of pervert?) but I bet it's a lot more than that. Women go as a matter of course to two different doctors: a regular GP and an gynecologist. If my doctor said "Sure I'll check your blood pressure but you have to see a specialist to look at your crotch," I'd get a new doctor.

If women catch on to how overpriced all their stuff is, the economy will really tank.

Atypical Person Reading Fark: Just get a friend to do it.

Indeed. Just buy a $20 clipper/attachment set, and get a friend to do the cutting. The clippers will last a long time, as long as no jackass decides to starch his hair beforehand.

Beats $12 haircuts. And the outcome is good.

It seems like a big deal but when I consider the amount I spend on video games and booze between haircuts it's probably more than a hundo, but at least video games and booze are worthwhile expenditures.

Is hair starching popular in your part of the world?

It really depends on what kind of hair you have. I have a friend who has very curly hair, and her cuts cost a ton. I prefer something around the 30 dollar range [hour+ of work] but the best hair cut I have received was from someone's mother in their living room. She cut it even, which seems to be something people have problems with.

Seth'n'Spectrum 2008-10-04 07:05:39 PM
Hm, went the way of the barber a few months back, he completely savaged my hair and made me look like an idiot.

Problem: I look like a tool with short hair.
Problem 2: I have ridiculously straight hair, meaning a bad cut also makes me look like a tool.
Problem 3: The barber didn't have a clue what he was doing.

Solution: Return to a third world country and get a proper haircut.

Not in my neck of the woods. It seems to be a Central/Eastern European thing, as the only person I personally know who does that sort of thing is from Central/Eastern Europe.

It's true. Dated a girl once who drove an hour away to get her hair done for this exact reason. She'd take a day off from work, drag along a girlfriend, and be gone the whole day. I thought it was crazy. She did look good though.

/now that I think about it, maybe she was just cheating

Yeah. It's all good until you come back to the dorm and catch your roommate trimming his pubes with it.

Yes, it did happen, and yes, I did beat his ass.

Simple haircuts can be done at home (trimming, using a bowl guide...), but if you have to have tri-coloured permed layering and routinely use a bottle of hairspray/gel each day... Well, I'd like to see the at-home YouTube video of that.

I'm in the Navy, and get my hair cut on base for $7.50 plus tip. Surprisingly, most of the barbers are really good and take the time to cut your hair the way you want it. I've had a few bad experiences in the last 15 years, but I wear my hair fairly short and it grows in very quickly, so I never have to live with the aftereffects of a bad haircut for more than two weeks.

Wait what? When did haircuts start costing three figures? I haven't had a haircut in about 8 years (cut my own) but back then it was about $15-$25 for a decent women's haircut.

Back around 1980 I'd put starch mixed w/water in my hair in leiu
of gel. Makes it spiky.

Just let it grow, then find a Lock of love donation shop, and it's free! But, you can't have colored or permed it, and hair length must exceed 8 or 10 inches. Yeah, between cuts, I look like Jabba the Hut in drag. You can't have Beauty AND the Beast at the same time ya know./

krazydiamond - When did haircuts start costing three figures?

I really have no idea what it might cost elsewhere but i know that when my coworker's daughter goes to the salon for a cut/style/ and colour it costs him about $150.

That is in London Ontario...i can't imagine what prices would be in a real city.

Lord Summerisle: Heh. I just get sheared every five or six weeks, "Number three all over". Plus nobody farks with you. It's all good!

My standard order is "Cut it back to the first curl, uncover my ears and don't bother with a part." I pay $18 including tip (that includes a beard trim), and that's only because I get it done in Harvard Square at La Flamme Barbershop, which has maintained its decor from the 1890's and is a charming place to overpay for a haircut.

HurricaneHattie 2008-10-04 07:29:20 PM
When I was a NYC girl in a NYC world, I would pay 100 for a cut. Now, I'm older, live in Louisiana, and realise I can look just as hot with a Walmart cut.

Is it in the City? It's the daddys-girl UWO whores that keep these places alive.

They also keep London good looking, so I guess it balances it out.
