It is exactly same in many U.S. states as well. My neighbor across the street was an Asst. Principal and just got put in jail for 2 years for boinking a 17 year old girl, although our age of consent otherwise is 16. It actually covers 17 AND 18 year olds in school that someone would be in a supervisor role of.

Actually, the premise is that, since the teachers are in a position of authority, the students cannot really consent.

I would argue that in most of the cases I've seen it seemed the kids weren't under any undue duress, but what do I know.

Generally speaking I think this makes sense if you're talking about a teacher in their 20's and a 17-18 year old. Still there are some situations that are far worse than just an error in judgment and more along the lines of a crime. Some kids are far less prepared emotionally to deal with something like an affair with a teacher than others.

In addition, the gender issue has a built in double standard in terms of societal outrage.

I might become a teacher with that kind of perk. Even with the low pay.

yeah i don't see why the law makes an exception if one of the two consenting adults is the other's teacher or instructor. i think perhaps the schools can have a private policy regarding the matter, but there shouldn't be a federal law against it.

i personally don't think there's anything wrong with a teacher seeing a student who is of the legal age of consent. they're both grown ups.

But seriously, I agree. From a legal standpoint, the age of consent should be the age of consent, with no exceptions for teachers. They are guilty of an error in judgement and could certainly get fired, but I don't think it's a criminal offence, nor should they be added to a sex offender registry.

The News of the Screws strikes again.

Even at 29, I couldn't imagine wanting to have a relationship with one of my students-even the 18 year old ones. High school students are just not stable people for the most part-they're children to me. I know that a young Farker who's in HS or just out is going to come in and be offended, but it's just a different mentality and life outlook I guess. That's not to say my students are horrible people. I like most of them, and enjoy their company-I just wouldn't want to try to have a relationship with one.

/Boinking for fun is right out, too. I wouldn't want to lead someone on with no intention of pursuing a true relationship (not sober, anyway), and, besides, I'm married and not into the whole adultery thing.
