The only thing that matters is whether or not it is delicious. If it is delicious, I want to grill some medium rare.

I saw some at the store the other day and it was like $40 for 1.5 pounds. Cheaper my ass!

Be realistic, though, LadyHawke -- not everyone can have a slice of your ass.

Good god, I can get a grass fed beef Ribeye at about 2.5 pounds for that price.

It is actually quite tasty, but its a little tricky to cook - cooked poorly and its gamey and tough.

Wallaby is nicer.

Its New Zealand, of course its cheaper if you don't havee to ship it across the planet. Just like lobster is cheaper than beef in Maine.

WTF is with this "grass-fed beef" thing? Is it just another way for enterprising farmers to charge more for less effort under the guise of environmentalism or a "more natural" outcome, like Organic?

Animatronik 2008-10-04 06:30:31 PM
it'd be cheaper if Australians would raise kangaroos instead of sheep (as Jared Diamond has pointed out).

Not to mention that kangaroos can actually live in a drought-prone continent without dying.

Chabash 2008-10-04 06:32:58 PM
I had kangaroo steak at a place in Vienna, it was okay but I'm not going to fly back just for that.

Cattle evolved to digest grass, not grain. They have some trouble with grain, and the metabolic result is bad-for-you omega-6 fatty acids. That's why corn-fed beef is slow, delicious poison.

Grass-fed beef has more omega-3s than salmon. It's health food. This is also the main reason that venison and bison are healthier than beef -- it's not the animal so much as the diet.

The corn and beef industry do not want you to know this. Actually, the corn industry is all-around pretty evil, certainly much worse than, say, the oil industry. It's not their fault; that's just where the money is.

also, grain-fed beef have digestive issues because their intestinal fauna are geared to digest cellulose, etc. It takes a different pH to digest grain, so the e.coli in their gut evolve to be more tolerant of lower pH's, much like our own. That's one of the reasons that people are getting e. coli infections so much more often now, because e. coli that would normally be destroyed by our low stomach pH are now thriving.

Oops

I submitted this days ago with a better headline. Fark sucks

gund 2008-10-04 06:41:12 PM
Does the corn industry not do any evil?

Ethanol, beef, corn syrup, subsidies.

How evil is the soybean industry? That's all they grow here in indiana. Corn and soybean.

animalmagnet 2008-10-04 06:41:42 PM
I'm having trouble following the logic in the headline. Since kangaroos have tinier farts, wouldn't it be better for the environment to go ahead and kill off the sheep and cattle as quickly as possible?

RealFarknMcCoy2 2008-10-04 07:07:45 PM
Kangaroo meat is the YUMMY (prepared properly). I like to marinate it, then grill it on the BBQ - rare is best. If you cook it too much, it gets stringy, tough and gamey. (It's kinda like venison in that way.)

It's far better for us Aussies to eat kangaroo, but sadly, most Australians grew up with "Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo" on tv, and get all sentimental about it... such a shame, because it is such an ideal meat for Australia to produce. And it's the most easily-digested meat for human consumption, I believe. We also have far more kangaroos in Oz than when Europeans first landed here...

Well, you can live on it, but it taste like shiat.

AngelTwo-Six 2008-10-04 07:17:42 PM
It's cheap in australia, not so much in the states. The last time a bunch of it made to the US, the Foodmaker Corp (Jack-in-the-box) had taken a large shipment of it and had to destroy all of it. Really. Someone screwed up the ladings and instead of the dog food it was intended for, it was going to go into tacos and cheap burgers.

I've had it. It's pretty good. But, then I've eaten stewed dog and liked that, too.

No one is addressing the obvious question.

How tasty and nutritious is kangaroo milk?

sheumack 2008-10-04 07:31:37 PM
MacG: The only thing that matters is whether or not it is delicious. If it is delicious, I want to grill some medium rare.

Yes. Its delicious. Its gamey like venison. Medium rare is about as far as you want to go as its low in intermuscular fat so gets tough once if you overcook it. Serve with wholegrain mustard and roasted fresh beetroot.

And here is Aus, yeah, its cheaper. Around $10 a kilo ($4 per pound) for roo fillet compared with $40 a kilo ($16 per pound) for supermarket grade Beef fillet.

I had kangaroo meat when I was in Australia last year. Very tasty, like concentrated beef flavour. Absolutely no fat at all, you have to use a lot of olive oil or something if you're frying it. Kind of like rabbit, but less stringy and better tasting.

I don't eat eyes. Unless it is in scrapple, or delicious sausage... but the thought of an eye fillet makes my stomach turn.
