Did anybody else look at this image and think someone was about five seconds from squishing the "rare giant salamander" with a shovel?

I love the cover copy on that paperback:

"Here is a great novelist's electrifying story of what might happen to our world tomorrow. With breathtakingly bold vision, Karel Capek gives us a prophetic vision as powerful as 1984, as startling and vivid as Brave New World."

1984. Brave New World... Battle of the F*cking Newts.

Right.

JohnnyRebel88: What the hell?

My guess would be that it's a species of giant Salamander. There are several that can hit six feet long.

It's scary that they would build Newcastle right on top of the old land fill. That salamander was probably born in some mercury laced soil.

/Mutant Salamander?

Dafodude [TotalFark] 2008-10-04 03:19:53 PM
Yeah, this is pretty much the only good thing about Newcastle. Otherwise it's just a zoo of overpriced McMansions, and I-405 traffic through there is a crapfest.

Ogre840 2008-10-04 03:20:48 PM
The picture in crazynickstyle's picture is a Chinese Giant Salamander.

During the month of October, the city of Newcastle will work with a volunteer group to install storm drain markers across the city with the message "No Dumping, Drains to River".

Now where can I empty my RV's chemical toilet now?

We called them waterdogs in KY. If you hooked one on your line when fishing, you just cut it off. Man those things were ugly.

That kinda reminds me, you ever hear the noise a marmot makes? Almost like an owl hooting, but farking LOUD. I've also been in Bellevue and have actually seen a squirrel, sitting on a stump, and howling (that's the best I can describe it.) Weirdest goddamn thing ever.

What is it with this state and noisy animals?

Just go upriver to Cougar Mountain. As a bonus, it's less densely populated, so the odor is less likely to offend.

Right.

I'd say it's as good a book as 1984, and far better than Brave New World. Just my opinion, of course.

Sentient salamanders might seem lame, but racial supremacy and nationalism were kinda on people's minds in Europe in 1936.

It's a shame that so many people know Orwell and Huxley, yet have never heard of Capek.

Oh for fark's sake, it's not about the damn salamanders.

Just because they didn't force-feed it to you in high school, doesn't mean it's not a good book.

Hey man, I came here for the "War with the Newts" references and glwtta delivered. It is a classic, although I admit the pulpish cover he posted might suggest otherwise. It's much more of a political satire than the sci-fi schlock horror indicated.

Written by the same guy who brought us Rossum's Universal Robots, no less.

Now, back on topic: am I the only one dissapointed these things only sound like dogs, and aren't the size of dogs?

So putting a picture of a salamander near the water drains will deter people from dumping chemicals? Stick with the fish pictures.
