"I heard her say, "Freeze, police. Freeze, or I'm going to shoot,' " said Karen Raga, a co-worker.

News at 11:00:
Waitress charged with impersonating a police officer and issuing terroristic threats.

What are you?

Well, I'm Sookie Stackhouse unidentified because I'm a former law enforcement officer, and I'm a waitress.

He must be one hell of a stupid bank robber then.

the video with this story shows the waitress (though not her face). it also says she is a german police officer who couldn't talk on camera without her boss's permission - which leaves me somewhat confused

Hindmost [TotalFark] 2008-10-04 12:20:19 PM
Bank robbery aside, I would definitely freeze if I heard a german woman screaming that she would shoot me if I didn't.

It was just like an action movie. She was like Indiana Jones or any other character you could name. She's definitely my hero.

You know what that means. Start naming characters.

Conan the Barbarian.

I thought it was ILLEGAL to impersonate a cop. Being an EX cop doesn't count. Here in the Peg, if a cop yells 'Stop or I'll shoot', the perp just rams him/her with the stolen SUV, resulting in a severe wrist-slapping by the judge. So really the cops here should just say; 'Halt, or you'll get SUCH a SLAP!'

zarkill 2008-10-04 12:43:24 PM
you can't make a citizen's arrest unless you personally witnessed the crime, anyway. not only was she impersonating a police officer, she assaulted and detained him against his will.

If she worked for a large chain store, she'd be fired for breaking some company policy related to apprehending someone in the process of a crime.

Good on her. Glad she didn't get shot.

Thank God you got here, Fark Lawyer. I was worried someone might applaud this woman's actions. You are the true hero here.

I didn't think that "freeze, or I'll shoot" constituted impersonating an officer.

Hero to who?

DrBrownCow 2008-10-04 01:01:07 PM
Somebody is a hero when they would still appear to be a hero if their actions don't work out. For example, a guy who dies in a fire trying to save a baby. That's a hero.

If this waitress had been shot, nobody would have called her a hero.

zarkill: you can't make a citizen's arrest unless you personally witnessed the crime, anyway. not only was she impersonating a police officer, she assaulted and detained him against his will.

TFA never advised that she stated she was an officer.

Also, in some states, anyone who has knowledge of an offense involving a theft, robbery, etc. has the right to prevent the consequences of theft, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure 18.16.

Wasn't a bright idea, though.

Boy if I were a waitress every day of my life - for pay - I would be MAD enough to shoot without a gun too.

FTFA: The waitress didn't want to talk about it or identify herself. The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office wouldn't identify her because she is a former law enforcement officer.

If she was a former cop, good for her.

I'm glad she took the law into her own hands and subdued this thief.
How dare he take all those bills from the banks that created them out of thin air.

A civilian can place someone under citizens arrest for a misdemeanor committed in their presence or a felony committed in or out of their presence. Thanks anyways, Fark lawyers.

I was surprised to find no "police do not reccomend citizens confronting potentially armed criminals blah blah blah" line in that article.

fourdegrees 2008-10-04 01:18:24 PM
I think some folks missed a bit. The waitress used to be a police officer. It sounds like upon suspecting a crime in progress and getting confirmation, her instincts and training took over. I doubt she really thought of much in that moment other than apprehending the bad guy, just like she was taught. I can't see criticizing her too much for that.

Was it a good idea? Not hardly. Did it work out in the end? Seems so. So let's all un-bunch our panties just a little, m'kay?

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm 2008-10-04 01:19:07 PM
One robbery occurred Sept. 16 at Anderen Bank, 3412 Eastlake Road in Palm Harbor. The other occurred Saturday at Fifth Third Bank, 1703 McMullen Booth Road in Safety Harbor.

Threatening to shoot a bank robber, who is probably armed, when you don't really have a gun, is a stupid thing to do. Both of these banks are nearby my house, the fifth third one within walking distance. Props to her for pulling this off, but this could just as easily turned into her darwining herself. I am usually armed and would probably try to stop a bank robber out of hopes of getting some reward money, but until I was actually in the situation I can't say for sure if I would have the balls. I would definitely not do it without a gun, so this woman has more guts than me.

/She probably has a very intimidating accent.

Seriously, she was probably really angry that day because she had an itch she just couldn't scratch.

So, she was a police officer in Germany, then moved to the United States and became a waitress. That doesn't really sound like a good deal to me.

Bingo. I have a CCW and always carry, but I am not about to interfere with a crime in progress unless someone's life is in immediate danger. Dude got the money and is going away? Great!

clipperbox 2008-10-04 01:40:48 PM
Same here Laz. I wouldn't interfere either, except to follow and see his means of escape to report that to the police.
