Subby, how dare you sully the reputation of a what is practically a bacon-based recipe?

Never had one but after looking it up online, they look pretty darn tasty. I find that the area I'm in, southeast Massachusetts near Rhode Island, is the destination of pork pie devotees from all over the United States:

A century of savoring a juicy bit of Brittania. At least it was, two years ago when the article was written. Hartley's Pork Pies are sold in Lincoln, RI and Somerset, MA while "Hartley's Original Pork Pies" are sold in Fall River, MA.

Ingredients

- 1 pork bone
- 600 ml (2 1/2 cups) water
- 1 sage leaf
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 sprig of thyme
- 1 onion
- Salt and pepper
Filling
- 450 g (1 lb.) chopped or coarsely ground Pork
- 1 sage leaf, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper
Hot-water pastry
- 225 g (8 oz.) flour
- 50 g (2 oz.) lard
- 60 ml (1/4 cup) water and 60 ml (1/4 cup) milk, mixed
- Salt and pepper

No offal in it.

Normally, I would be defending HP's to the hilt for most foods, but in the case of cheap, dodgy pork pies, Daddiess is somehow infinitely better. Fruitier?

I live in Georgia, near an AFB, and a British store opened nearby, and they sell all kinds of Brit stuff, like REAL Cadbury Milk Bars, and crisps, and Spotted Dick, and clotted creams, and Golden Syrup, and all kinds of candys, teas, chocolate biscuits, digestives, canned items and some refrigerated ones of bangers and pork pies and other things...mmmmm expensive as hell....but mmmmmm

Agree, in principle. But i wouldn't say that English food was bland. It is seasoned, but it certainly isn't spicy. I really like Cornish pies, English breakfasts, double Devon cream, and anything else they were making before the industrial age.

I would guess that most people form their opinions from low end (bargain) dining in London. Unless you are eating ethnic food, the budget dining experience in London can be dreary.

Probably the best meal I've ever eaten in London was a Cornish pasty I bought from some little shop in London. If I lived there, I'd probably eat one every day.

Pork pies are a gift from the FSM and proof that he loves the British the most. Since I moved to the US I had to start making my own, along with Lincolnshire sausages, instead of the evil we get here, scotch eggs, cornish pasties and other real food. Sure its bland and boring and annoying, but its still real to me damnit.

If you can handle making and rolling dough, they're not at all hard to cook yourself. Plus you can fill them with whatever you want. I have them at least once a month and I make a couple dozen at a time so I can enjoy them all week...
