Well in all fairness, Lincoln was even more of a "uniter not a divider" as W and started a drawn out and unpopular war. And he was the 1st Republican president after the break of the Democratic Republican Party..

So really, it is Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and one of the founders of the Democratic-Republican party who would weep. No election should be allowed to affect the normal operation of the government.

True, but in the past they backfired because it was a stupid decision (like allowing the United Arab Emirates to buy a significant amount of US ports in 2006). This time the decision to sent a diplomat is a giid one (in theory) but it's sidetracked in the interest of McCain's campaign.
