Doesn't that remind anyone of another place & time?

Buncha people not neccessarily loathsome in and of themselves, but supporting a vicious, expansionist, inhumane, bigoted, militaristic government feared and opposed by large portions of the civilized world?

Think hard.

I dislike the "land of the free" slogan that is still perpetuated, when the US now has more restraints (wire taping, any stand that challenges the government is "un-American", etc) on it's populous than most communist countries.

that's what they say now. When next we have a government that they on paper should approve of, they'll come to their senses and go back to hating us on an individual basis.

Depends on the type of research :) But yes, in general funding for research is the best in the US. There are some downsides though.

Truthfully, I don't like most people in America and I'm an American. Most of us are blissfully ignorant and easily manipulated.

Hyperbole. You has it.

Don't get me wrong, the Patriot Act is unconstitutional bullshiat, but we're not nationalizing or shutting down any and all media outlets that disagree with El Presidente.

It may be true that the government spies on its citizens better than the commies do, but that's a function of technology and wealth, not of a more restrictive environment.

I hate my government too.

If I went out of the country on vacation, I'd fake an English or Canadian accent.

I don't understand how any country in the world could like our government. It's like a bad joke or a really scary nightmare.

That's just the international relations version of breaking up with someone, saying "it's not that I don't love you, I'm just not in love with you." They do hate us, do not want to be our friends, and would probably feel a sense of relief if we died in an accident somehow.

I agree with you on that one. I loved being in Europe and seeing boobs in shampoo commercials, compared to the U.S. where they give huge fines for wardrobe malfunctions. One thing I never understood about my fellow countrymen is their fear of the human body.

To bad we can't go back in time and trade. I'd rather have her in the White House than GW.

Having traveled for extended bits of time and drinking many pints with many different nationalities, the consensus seems to be that the best adjective to describe Americans is gregarious. We are sociable, friendly, and down-to-Earth. I've also found in conversation that the "loud" American stereotype doesn't hold water among a lot of people (while living abroad I've actually found that you can hear Germans coming a mile away). Meh, but overall I guess you find that people are people the world over and there's not really a country of 'bad' people anywhere in the world...except Elbonia.

For now. With the funding situation the way it now, that's already starting to change. China is making a big push to build up their universities and research infrastructure. Watch the Nobel Prizes. When they started moving from Europe to America, it was a sign that we had arrived. When they start moving from America to China, we'll know we've crossed the threshold.

Mrbogey 2008-10-04 10:45:32 AM
The people who hate the US the most are the sort you don't want to be admired by.

We've been pretty much the same for the past 40 years. We haven't changed. The world has. And they had the luxury to do so in large part because the US was guarding them or giving them weapons.

Everyone hates the US till they need us.

It's not true that foreigners dislike Americans... it's just our government they can't stand

I read anti-American editorials each week that crap on US society (i.e., the people) in UK newspapers, and equally condescending French-to-English or German-to-English translations from their neighbors across the Channel. And these are just our allies.

But that's alright. There's plenty of friendly fire at home too. This is called being progressive for something....

You forgot inappropriately dressed.

Here's a hint - even though you're (not necessarily you) on vacation, if you're going to visit a major church/temple/generic religious site which is still actively used for religious ceremonies, you may still want to put on a proper pair of pants and a decent shirt. No one (including the holy trinity, Buddha, Allah, or whoever else might be hanging around) wants to see you tromping around their place of worship in shorts, sandals, and a loud t-shirt or halter top advertising a beer company.

I've done a fair amount of traveling and have never received a single unfriendly comment from anyone when they find out I'm an American. People generally seem interested and one guy in France told us how lucky we were, and that he was trying to emigrate. I thought he was trying to get me to trust him so he could rob me or something.

What am I doing wrong?

Counter_Intelligent 2008-10-04 10:49:47 AM
I can totally understand the world's hatred of us. I went to Sweden a few years ago, and almost killed myself when a lady got pissed at a tour guide because she didn't see any vikings.
