Does this mean he was smart enough to be VP back then? Probably would've been an improvement.

I remember that being a huge deal back in the day, yet it doesn't compare to even the comparatively minor gaffes committed by both sides this time around. I mean the card did say, "potatoe". It's not like he couldn't name a newspaper or thought Abraham Lincoln text messaged Jesus about WWII.

Thanks for making me feel OLD. That seems just like yesterday.

FTA: "Now a 28-year-old father, Figueroa says he doesn't talk with people much about what happened. He says he rarely brings it up."

So he's moved on with his life. How healthy.

James Danforth Quayle. Earned a law degree from a respectable school while serving in the national guard. Worked in Indiana state government for four years, was a US Representative for four years, and a US Senator for eight. His JTPA bill was, arguably, more substantive than anything John McCain has gotten done in the last 26 years in the Senate.

Sarah Palin. Sportscast journalism degree from Idaho after bouncing out of four other schools. Small town sportscaster. Seasonal fishing operator. Mayor of a four-digit town that was then compelled for the first time to hire a full-time city manager because the mayor was unable to keep up. Governor of Alaska for 20 months.

Sarah Palin, you're no Dan Quayle.

FTFA: Watching the vice presidential debate wasn't an option -- work keeps him buy -- and he also hasn't had time to look into the candidates' platforms.

I wonder if the author did that on purpose for giggles or is just a failure?

That must have been a lot of therapy.

That's because she treats debates like a fungible commodity, and she flags the talking points so she knows where they are going and where they're not.

Sounds like the guy has had a hard childhood, but is keeping his head above water and thinks the whole thing was blown out of proportion (which it was). Good for him.

She? Dan Quayle is a he. Or was that intentional? lol.

You're probably too young to remember, but he really didn't win the debate - Lloyd Bentsen absolutely owned him. Didn't matter in the long run, though. The debate combined with the potatoe incident didn't preclude Bush/Quayle from taking the election. A lesson in the importance of the VP and/or the VP debate lies therein, I suppose.

With the current set standard, he's probably smart enough to be VP now.

Oh. So you do remember. Then why claim Quayle won the debate? This is, after all, a thread about Dan Quayle and the relation of this fellow thereto.

Oakenshield: The debate combined with the potatoe incident didn't preclude Bush/Quayle from taking the election.

The potatoe incident didn't take place until 4 years after the election, much like FDR getting on TVradio to talk to the American people didn't take place until 4 years after the 1929 stock market crash.

FTA: Watching the vice presidential debate wasn't an option -- work keeps him buy -- and he also hasn't had time to look into the candidates' platforms.

"Before the election, I plan to sit down and take a full day to do research before I decide who I think would make best president," he said.

But he's looking for a good leader, not a good speller.

What's with the increase in font size; something being emphasized by Fox?

/I'm certain it's accidental.

This guy had a rough life:

"There were a lot of opportunities that I missed because of problems with home life when I was younger," he said. "My father was a drug addict -- still is. I was just a young man, so in order to get anywhere, be driven to an interview or anything, I had to give him monetary compensation. All the money I made (from interviews and ads) was basically stolen for drugs."

Figueroa said he occasionally talks with his father, but he said they are "not on good terms" and generally leave each other alone. Attempts to reach his father were unsuccessful.

If it were me, I would bring it up all the time. It would become the center of my being. Much like the time I shook hands with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Let me tell you about that....

Tacoby Bellisbury: LOL bitter libs pissed she won the debate.

Only polls that have her winning were the unscientific polls that could be flooded by bots, and she only won two of those. The rest of the polls have Biden winning by a minimum of 3% overall, and as much as 10% among the independent survey groups that each network used for an in house assessment (yes, even Fox News had her lose that one).

William Figueroa is ..... Potatoe Boy

And how is a 12yr old only 28, twenty years later?

The event was in 1992. 16 years ago. 16 + 12 = 28.

Math is hard.

Twelve plus 16 equals 28. You snapperhead.

FTA: Sarah Palin and Joe Biden may have made a few mistakes during Thursday night's vice presidential debate, but it remains to be seen whether their mistakes will stick in voters' minds like one infamous vice presidential gaffe from the 1992 election.

Here's some useless trivia: The Sen. Bentsen comment to Sen. Quayle, "I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. You sir, are no Jack Kennedy." was exactly 20 years ago today. Oct 5th, 1988.Link (new window)

The "Potatoe Gaffe" was June 15, 1992.
