I'm just excited we have a candidate that knows a little something about the Internet.
I just didn't see that in Hillary, Cheney, McCain or even Bush.

Cause you know, when i'm visiting a city the first thing I do is look up my local campaign office so i can pick up some propaganda.

I'm a fan of the PDA stuff, i've had one for several years, but i think some of these apps are just silly.

As someone in IT for 20+ years, it's shiat like this that I want to see from our President. Sure, only elitists have iPhones today, but it wasn't too long ago that Joe Twelvepack couldn't conceive of a cell phone. High Tech can drive our economy for the next 50 years. Longer if we own the best alternative energy technologies too. I want a President that understands this, or at the least, surrounds himself with people who do.

king_nacho [TotalFark] 2008-10-03 07:21:28 PM
As somebody else who's been in IT for 10+ years its this type of stuff I don't want to see from our President.

People waste time and money on silly projects that don't make sense, and that are used by a small population of the people.

the PDA/Smartphone things isn't going to take off like cell phones did, because they fit a niche. One that gadget and or business people like.

I don't see the normal person having an iPhone or any other PDA, no matter how easy they are to use, they are expensive, both up front, and monthly.

I work in IT at a fairly large university, roughly 30k students. We always thought by this time people would be pretty versed in using computers, and we wouldn't need tech support to guide an 18 year old adult college student how to save a file to the desktop of a computer. Turns out we were wrong.

Normal People don't understand technology now any more than they did 15 years ago.

If only there were a lot of gadget-ophiles and businesspeople in the US. If only...

You have a point here. I think the point is the the Obama campaign is using several "new" forms of media, not just broadcast and print. They're literally redefining the meaning of political engagement.

I downloaded this last night, haven't done much with it yet. I have a brand new iPod Touch, not an iPhone, so there's no monthly charges at all. The location part doesn't work too well, at least at home. I should try it here at work and see if it works here.

My first PC had 256K, 2 floppy drives, and cost close to $7000 in today's dollars. Now they're accessible to almost every American.

I can do without the vomit-sweeping powder, though. I'd rather smell the vomit all day, thanks.

It's funny how many of the tech-savvy readers here don't know that John McCain was the guy who started using the Internet as an effective campaign tool - while Obama was still dreaming about being a Senator. Mailing lists, web sites, et cetera. They're keeping it up, by fast online updates to their sites and really fast rebuttals to the Obama campaign (they had a big list of Biden gaffes up within an hour of the finish of the debate last night, for example).

Meanwhile, the Obama people are using lots of new tech - badly. Note the comment for the Obama supporter above: a neatokeen iPhone app that 98% of their people will download - and not use.

Right, just like computers will never need more than 640k.

Nobody thought camera phones would take off, but they did.

What about that text messaging? That'll never become commonplace.

Quit your IT job grandpa, you've already fallen out of the loop.

He should trying doing it again. According to the polls the last weeks his campaign has been anything but effective. Unless his goal is to lose.

Yes, this is for a small, rather narrowly-defined group.

But guess what? That group is also very likely to the group who will go out and assist Obama, and want to talk and network with other Obama supporters.

This probably took someone a half a day to make, and if it turns a few hundred votes, it's worth it.

someone please start collecting all of these "=" pics and put them in one place!

...not me though, small servers will get royally farked

as an iPhoner who is thinking of voting for Obama, all i can say is : ho hum. king_nacho is right, some of the apps people write for the thing are borderline retardo. Maybe once you download the Obama App you can tell them to just keep track of you by GPS in case Barack or Joe suddenly need YOU to do a special mission... Is it so hard to open Safari and search for the nearest campaign office?

Plus, you get the bonus of an Obama logo on your iPhone.
