I'm confused. They paid 9% on over 100k?

I paid 17% on 40k. Do you pay a lower percentage the more you make?

/Can't wait for the Obama tax cuts.

There's a reason this was released on Friday:

She didn't report her per Diem payments to work out of her home. It adds up to a lot. Small business owners get audited and fined all the time for things like that.

Watch for the right wing spin machine to rev up and call this perfectly acceptable in 3..2..1...

Corvus 2008-10-03 06:16:01 PM
For 2006, the Palins paid $11,944 (LINE 63) in total taxes on gross income of $127,869 (LINE 37), which is a 9.3% tax rate.

For 2007, the Palins paid $24,738 (LINE 63) in total taxes on gross income of $166,080 (LINE 37), which is a 14.9% tax rate.

And remember the Republican keep telling you rich people pay too much in taxes!!!

Do you make less than $100? do you pay more than 9.3%?

Top Tax Rate is not what people actually pay, but Republican's like to pretend it is.

Yes you do because you have more things to write off or defer your taxes on like house payments and 401k and make more money from capital gains which is taxed at a lower rate.

This is why the monthly WSJ stories of "Rich taxed 35% most in the world" is such BS because no one actually pays that.

Want to read about the thousands of Americans who make 200k+ who pay NO income tax. This is what Obama is talking about for fairness in the tax code.

They Earn $200,000 and Pay No Taxes (new window)

Yeah that did it, cheers.

FTFA:

Responding to Hurricane Katrina, Washington exempted charitable contributions between Aug. 27, 2005, and Jan. 1, 2006, from the overall limit on itemized tax deductions and the 50% of adjusted gross income limit for such giving. The one-time change wasn't limited to hurricane-related contributions.

"There was no excuse for not restricting it to the affected area," said Joann Weiner, a former Treasury Department employee who analyzed the changes in her current job as a contributing editor at Tax Analysts, a non-profit publisher of tax information and data.

Under the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, Washington also allowed taxpayers to eliminate up to 100% of their alternative minimum tax liability by using credits for any foreign taxes paid. Before tax year 2005, those credits could only eliminate 90% of federal income taxes.

The first two paragraphs are apparently to incentivize people to donate to charities and what not, which sounds nice but looks like according to this article is rife for abuse.

the last paragraph tho is for letting expats off the hook. As a former expat i sure resented paying American income tax for money i made in Germany or Switzerland; i didnt receive any of the benefits of the taxes paid, and i didnt even earn the money in the US, why should i pay taxes on it when i'm already paying taxes in the country where i earned the money?

I guess my point is, I kinda support the second one. :)

Mine are reimbursed on a company check and counted on my w2. I don't need to declare them separately, since they were reimbursed. Only if they fail to reimburse.

Six exemptions (joint filing, four dependent children), $7.4K deduction for state/local taxes, $10K deduction for home mortgage interest, $3K in charitable contributions.

Looks like a $9.6K loss on snowmobile racing as well. *shrug*

Saint Sarah will be in town on Monday. This is one of the reddest parts of Florida. If they have to be shoring up the base in October like this then McCain/St. Sarah are in trouble.

Or John McCain's medical records?

You need to get a bunch of whitebreads to go with you and learn a chant. When it gets attention, change it from pro-Palin to pro-Obama.

Meh. Between states, one changed vote in Utah is worthless compared to a changed vote in Virginia. But, within a state, one changed or confirmed vote in a red area is as good as one in a blue area.

The fact that they are now struggling to keep Florida is a problem for the duo-who-don't-speak-for-their-campaign. It's possible Obama could win it, but I hope he gets enough votes elsewhere that we aren't relying on the intelligence of Florida election monitors.

And if you then live in a country where you don't pay any income taxes? Then all you need to do is live there and never pay income taxes.

Getting the McCain campaign to waste time in Florida is the epitome of Patton's credo: "Don't die for your country, get the other son of a biatch to die for his."

Can someone explain why the 2007 return was prepared on 9/3/2008? Is it typical for people in public office to delay these things past the April deadline?

Simple. The Palins filed a 6 month extension. Commonly used. They had until October 15th to file. Matter of fact, most of my clientele waits till October 15th for various reasons, most of them because they have businesses or partnerships that haven't filed their returns in April and are waiting on the Schedule K-1 which would be their share of the partnership.

which countries are those? do those exist? if they do, i bet they're damn hard to get residency permits in.

even the swiss, which are a haven for rich folks because they have very little taxes in comparison to the rest of the western world, they do pay something.

if you're rich enough though you can go down to your local Kanton city hall and negotiate a package w/ the tax authorities. Guys like boris becker and michael schumacher and other stinkin' rich germans do that.
