McCain has a long history of pushing to have social security moved to private investment accounts hyperbole is not the same as a blatant lie

Lurking Fear 2008-10-03 03:13:33 PM
Nah, 2 wrongs don't make a right.
Even Obama admitted some BS gets out in his ads (MTV interview, of all places). Still, he doesn't claim to be mr. 100% truth.

I gnu you were going to say that.

I thinks it's cool that folks like Kapono hold Obama to a higher standard than McCain. It shows how low his expectations are for the Republicans. Frankly, everyone should do the same.

It's not a straight-out lie, it's a deceptive ad from the school of half-truths and dubious juxtapositions and associations. It's not a lie that John McCain favored a plan that would "risk your social security money in the stock market." After all, some people would certainly exercise their choice and put their money in the market, where it would be at risk. It's not the entire truth, but it's not in and of itself a lie.

Similarly, it's not a lie to invite someone to imagine their money being tied into one of those specific failed institutions. It certainly invites an inference that the money could have been in those specific institutions, but it also just as reasonably an example of the kind of failures and losses that could happen to otherwise-available investments in the market.

That doesn't make them right, but let's save the "lie" label for actual lies.

Um, where did anyone say that McCain is excused from doing it or shouldn't be condemned for doing it? You partisan asshats make me crazy. Totally willing to criticize the other guy, but unwilling to look at your own house's behavior.

Mordant: I thinks it's cool that folks like Kapono hold Obama to a higher standard than McCain. It shows how low his expectations are for the Republicans. Frankly, everyone should do the same.

Higher standard than McCain? Where are you getting that from? I hold them to equal standards.

He shouldn't do it and I hate it. But it has been proven that the Dems have played 'nice' the last couple elections - thinking they could win on facts and issues. It just doesn't work that way.

In theory, no one likes negative ads. But in practice, they work. No one likes it. That's just how it is.

Okay, let's have a joint news conference.

Obama: "I apologize for saying on a number of occasions that John McCain would risk your social security benefits on the stock market. That was disingenuous. In reality, putting your social security money on the stock market would have been voluntary, not mandatory."

McCain: "And I apologize for saying on a number of occasions that Barack Obama would raise your taxes. That also was disingenuous. In reality, tax payers making less that $250,000 per year would see no tax increase."

Shake hands. End of conference.

Until then...

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-10-03 04:27:36 PM
Sounds like both sides are playing the "WE'RE ALL GOING TO farkING DIE AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO GO BROKE! OMGWTF!!!!!" card. McCain's better at it though.

Sorry, I didn't mean to downplay all of the countless times you've admonished conservatives or the scathing posts you've made against so many Republicans. I guess I just notice the anti-lib comments more because I'm so incredibly partisan.

I would have gone with:

Obama: "I apologize for saying on a number of occasions that John McCain would risk your social security benefits on the stock market. That was disingenuous. In reality, putting your social security money on the stock market would have been voluntary, not mandatory."

McCain: "And I apologize for saying on a number of occasions that Barack Obama would raise your taxes. That also was disingenuous. Only people with income have to worry about income taxes. Under Obama's new business taxes this will not be a problem for a growing number of you"

At this point, why do they still talk? It's all crap and hatemongering anyway. I say all campaigns should be settled by a series of physical face-offs. Slingshot match, paintball, log rolling, roo boxing, and for the Presidential election, they put on those big, puffy sumo suits and have it out. Winner take all. This shiat is tiresome.

No, you haven't missed those at all. I don't claim they exist.

I consider Democrats to be a case of Herpes these days whereas I see Republicans as some sort of mutated cross between AIDS, Leprosy, and Syphilis.

I may be way off base about that, but I don't deny it.

I hope to look into the Herpes problem when the other issue isn't bothering me so much.

Once again, I apologize if all my claims of being an independent misled you. I wasn't aware that I had made them.

Yeah, I can't get on board with that either. A lie is a lie.

In fairness, pretty much everything coming from the McCain camp these days is a lie or a smear, so if Obama's wrong in advocating this, it is true that McCain is worse.

As opposed to any other time in history where politicians never distorted the positions of their opponents.

What is this factcheck.org? I'm reading an article that confirms what the stupid ad says.

Except with the cravats of voluntary and not directly.

It still holds water. And it's still a stupid god damn plan.

Why does Obama wanna teach kindergarteners how to have sex? Is that so they can be young prostitutes, earning taxable wages, which Obama can then tax because he's going to raise everyone's taxes by 400%?

I like FactCheck.org a lot usually, but I find this dubious.

Look at the sources they picked for their fact-checking:

The White House, "Strengthening Social Security for the 21st Century," Feb. 2005.

"Fact Sheet: Strengthening Social Security For Those In Need," White House Fact Sheet, 28 April 2005.

Press Conference of the President, White House Transcript, 28 April 2005.

White House Office of the Press Secretary, "Background Press Briefing on Social Security," press release, 2 Feb 2005.

Why not use this guy?
