The House has passed the economic bailout bill 263 to 171.

Here we go...

Assume the position.

Market dropped 100 points from its peak right as it passed. The bill doesn't pass before and it tanks. It passes and it tanks.

I have no idea what the long-term implications of the bailout are. I don't think anyone else does, either.

And the DJIA is down about 150 from where it was 10 minutes ago...

It was dropping all through the vote, too. It was up 250 just prior to the vote.

incendi [TotalFark] 2008-10-03 01:35:26 PM
I just blew 100 bucks on FNM while watching the House's last few comments right before voting, just to see what would happen with it.

That's why it bothers me. They act way too fast and think so shortsighted. Let's throw $700B at it now and not worry about the implications of the future. Sure, it might help now, but it might fark us later.

Also, this version bothers me because of all the 'sweeteners' *cough*pork*cough* that are in this shiat.

OK, so in reality, how will this affect the amount we pay in taxes every year, anyone know? Or are we just gonna borrow all of this money as well?

labman [TotalFark] 2008-10-03 01:37:01 PM
So how long before other companies all start asking for handouts.

My money is on the airlines, Big 3 automakes, and big oil.

I can't believe it actually passed. I know that something needed to be done, but I really didn't think that this would go through. Have we completely lost control of our government?

From what I heard, the treasury is selling a bunch of T-bills to the Chinese. But I don't know much about anything.

MIguy [TotalFark] 2008-10-03 01:41:48 PM
I'm no expert on the economy but it seems pretty obvious to me that this bailout is necessary to avoid total collapse of the US economy. Anybody care to tell me how we would have avoided a total collapse without this?

$700 billion is nearly 1/3rd of the Federal government's budget. The Federal Reserve is going to have to loan us some more money for this.

deadapostle [TotalFark] 2008-10-03 01:43:58 PM
I guess this one is going to be the greenlit link.

The first bill was horrible.
The second bill was acceptable.
The third bill was basically the same, but with 10 other acts stapled to it.

I agree, my question is... where do we get the money?

So..what happens next? This better farking work. I didn't want it to come to this, but I also don't want farking bread lines in this country.

Can we all agree, at least, that the FBI should send some people to PMITA prison in short order????

Everyone is liquidating their assets. This does not address that. It will save and consolidate banks into HUGE institutions.

We're farked no matter what.

Actually, I haven't seen any argument that a collapse was inevitable or even the most likely scenario. Some of us would rather have watched capitalism happen.

It's not what I definitely wanted, but neither is the buyout.

Buffett is a very, very smart investor. That's why he's got more money than god (unless you include the vatican's holdings), and we're all relatively poor.

Yes we can! Hold these farkers responsible. If you are going to do something like this, you better fix the problem and not just treat the symptoms.

My understanding is we're screwed either way. We're choosing a bad option with known bad consequences instead of going with the worse option with unknown bad consequences.

I got the impression that with a bailout the economy is going to tank at some indeterminate time in the future and without the bailout the economy would be taking at some point in the near future.
