His voice has no where the range it did back then. This might be wonderful, or it might suck mightily.

yeah but the hollywood bowl has a way of bringing the best out of performers. the old lady and i have already decided on "sweet thing" for our wedding dance, should that day ever come.

Wait, Van Morrison was in the Doors?

Yeah, I'm slightly confused about the headline.

I'm thinking submitter was trying (poorly) to make some kind of joke. Didn't the Doors (with Jim Morrison) do a live Hollywood Bowl album? I think that's the connection he was going for.

Saw him a few months back and it was a big "meh" he just was not into it at all - hopefully he actually shows up and performs for this, would make an excellent DVD

marcpen [TotalFark] 2008-10-03 02:18:56 PM
Not if it runs a second over 90 minutes. Van the Twat has a rule that he walks offstage at exactly 90 minutes, regardless of what he's in the middle of singing.
A total douchebag. I have a friend who was his bassist for a while. He was a petulant, dirty, capricious, drunken diva who'd fire a musician just for looking at him the wrong way.
Now he's all of that with an anti-booze message so nobody is allowed to drink AT ALL at his gigs. That's right. He has the bar closed for the night.

Best album to get the old lady in the right mood. That album is pure sex.

Your confusion is confusing me. What would the Doors doing something at the Hollywood Bowl have to do with Van Morrison performing this album there? Lots of artists have done shows there over the years. I don't see any poorly constructed joke. Am I missing something?

Oh, and seeing this would be fun, but I'm guessing the price tag is steep...

*checks Ticketbastard*

...and it is. Tickets are $75-350 a pop.

I saw him years ago and in 90 minutes he played 1 song I knew, a 10 minute version of Gloria. my sister in law saw him this year. she was ticked since the tickets were way expensive and he sucked

I'm thinking this. I've seen clips of him at concert and he really does just walk off stage, and his voice sucks, and his new material is non-existent. Remember the old Van, he was something rare.

colosprtsfan 2008-10-03 04:01:46 PM
Sold my soul to see him at Red Rocks couple summers ago. He did indeed walk off the stage at 90 minutes. Next day, on KBCO Brett Saunders was sucking off Van, saying " best show i have ever seen him do".

/van is WAY better when he is drunk/ high
// bring him back

HumeVsKant 2008-10-03 04:02:39 PM
The Hollywood Bowl has five levels of seating area. (Six if you include the area closest to the stage, known as the 'Pool Circle,' as its own level.) Van Morrison requested that only the first two levels and the Pool Circle be used for the concert. The upper three are going to be completely empty. Which means he's booked a concert at one of the largest outdoor theaters in the world, which seats around 17,500 and he's only selling tickets to about 8,000 people. This man must be crazy.

Still! Means there'll be less people to deal with.

/Works at the Bowl.
//No, I can't score you any tickets.

He may be the embodiment of a man-toad, but his voice does things to me that by all rights normal sound waves shouldn't be capable of.

If you have never heard it, track down a copy of "Too Late to Stop Now". Fantastic live Van Morrision that I doubt he will top with this show.

kentriccubed 2008-10-03 04:43:30 PM
I have collected quite a few of his albums and love them all. Even his newer albums have some great material. "Magic Time" is my personal favorite of his more recent releases, (Celtic New Year is one of his career best songs) though I haven't heard his newest album, so I couldn't judge it yet.

Though I haven't seen him in person, I've heard his concert style is erratic, (possibly owing to stage fright) and that some of his shows are simply awful, while others are among the best live performances of all time. Though I can't personally confirm this, I will say that Van's performance in "The Last Waltz" is the high water mark of an already fantastic concert film.

I caught Beck at the Hollywood Bowl a couple weekends ago and it was my first show there since moving to LA.

WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME I COULD BRING BOOZE AND FOOD INSIDE THE VENUE!?!?!? ARRRRGH!

Great place to catch a show - highly recommended.

Ok, I won't.

I saw him twice in the mid-70s;
the 'It's Too Late Stop Now' and next tour, 18 months later.

I will go with my memories and DAMN! those were good shows.

Good choice. My wife and I danced to "Into the Mystic" for our wedding dance.
