I still like me some Henry Rollins.

/but not in that way

Gunny Highway 2008-10-03 10:12:05 AM
FTFA Since then, he's continued in music with the Henry Rollins Band, but has focused much of his energy in different sorts of endeavors, including spoken word tours (he's on one currently), TV programs, radio shows and film roles.

Anyone down for a TV Party tonight? All you need to bring is a Six Pack.

Shut up Henry, you ignorant slut.

eliasvict 2008-10-03 10:39:21 AM
It's taken out of context isn't it?

And in America, everyone goes, "Oh, what?! You drop a crucifix in a jar of urine?" And that's the only art that's ever been created. It was piss-Christ, and that was it. That was end of the NEA [National Endowment of the Arts]. Because you give 'em money and that's what they'll do: they'll piss in a jar and drop a crucifix in it. So fark 'em. And so the arts have to exist in spite of all that.

In context.

It was. Rollins is pro NEA, not against it.

Henry Rollins is awesome. He comes off as a low-brow meat-head, but he has some pretty good insight. Mad props for him strolling into Iran a few years ago, lying about his profession so they'd let him in.

nope, still out of context. The context was Rollins' explaining that people in America don't appreciate the arts. That quote (even the full one) was meant to give an example of how lack of understanding of the arts condemned the NEA. Your full quote suggests that he was for getting rid of NEA because it created piss-christ. In reality, he was suggesting that such thoughts are ignorant.

The Weiss/Haskett/Cain era Rollins band was incredible live, but I didn't like the direction the band went after that.

And to those that favor pre-Rollins Black Flag I say to each their own. I'm not saying it was Henry's doing, but late era Black Flag was doing much more interesting stuff than they had before.

I feel like TFA has the quotation marks all wacky; I get that he's marking "Piss Christ" as the death knell for the NEA. What isn't clear, because of the wording, is whether he is pissed off strictly at those that condemn the arts, or those people and the "Piss Christ" artist.

Our general lack of interest in the arts, compared to Europe, has a lot of very valid roots:

1. We are a young culture with really varied and watered-down history (ex: I'm Irish but wtf do I know about being Irish?)

2. We are a huge country, space-wise, but not a densely populated one. Most of the US has strong agrarian foundations, far from cities and cultural centers. As those cities grew, so too did the disparity of character between urban and rural.

3. Everything that we invented, we like a lot. Blues, Rap, Rock'n'roll, bluegrass, country... can't get enough. Most other artistic media was around long before the 1700s.

4. Artists are separated from the rest of the school, often have difficulty relating to their classmates (hence the unique take on the world), and many express a heartfelt sorrow at being human, alive, American, whatever. That drags people down, and makes them not want to relate. We're an upbeat people in general, as much as we b*tch about this or that.

5. There are no pyrotechnics, bone-jarring hits, or particularly deafening noises. BORING!

SuperLJ 2008-10-03 11:26:55 AM
I hated my only year of art school because of the pretentious "oooh look, I'm doing something taboo" mindset. How much talent is involved in pissing in a jar, mixing it with vinegar, calling it a self-portrait (ooh, clever, you get it?!), and leaving it to stink up the hallway? Or how about setting up a booth where people can take their underwear off and string them up from the ceiling so the unsuspecting suckers walking to class get an inadvertent face-full? Or how about pissing in a condom as a protest to birth control (wtf... doesn't even make sense).

I know everyone's perception of art is different, and if it was provocative and took real effort, it would be one thing. But emptying the bladder you filled up on an all-night bender into a condom and hour before you hand it in for your art final is a freaking cop-out.

Well, all that and post-modern art (what ever the fark that is) is stupid and pointless. Piss Christ was just a farking attention whore troll and, I'm sorry I don't find "nothing" or a bunch of smeared colors to be very compelling. Thw wife (big art freak- and lib) drags me to a fair share of art openings, galleries and museums and out of 100-500 pieces I usually only find 1 that makes it remotely worth my time. Why do you think they serve wine at those stupid things.

Now a good play or Opera- that's a different story.

More than you might think. Sure, you don't have the accent, or do the superficial things that are thought of as the "culture" of Ireland, but I would bet dollars to donuts the roots of your ethics and morals extend all the way across the Atlantic.

You act the way you do in the largest part due to how your parents acted. Likewise for them, all the way back.

This is why I am less distressed that my son is adopted than one might otherwise think: It is my mission as a parent to instill the ethics, morals, and lessons in him that my parents instilled in me, their parents instilled in them, and so on. Genetics won't do that.

Now, it happens that I'm a typical American Mutt: I've got a lot of ancestors from a bunch of places, but most either came from England or Ireland, which probably explains my tendency to boil everything.

I can hear echos of my ancestry in some of the things I do. Why am I the way I am? To a large degree, it's because of who came before me.

SaladMonkey: The context was Rollins' explaining that people in America don't appreciate the arts.

That's understood, but I think he's wrong - the reaction to the kind of art that Piss Christ represented shows that there is some appreciation of the arts in America. The religious indignation was only a part of the rejection of that work; there was and still is a greater understanding at play: calling something art doesn't make it art.

Furthermore, to argue that one's level of support for the NEA is any kind of litmus test for artistic appreciation is frighteningly ignorant, especially coming from someone whose artistic career has been funded commercially. It's as empty and hypocritical as platinum-selling rock bands writing songs where they bash the rich.

Speaking personally, I hate so-called "modern art" - twisted metal "sculptures", splatter paintings, ballet choreography that looks like the "dancers" are getting electro-shock treatment, art music that's made of out of random noise - and I'd even argue that by definition of the various media, most modern art produced in those media can be, objectively, judged as NOT art.

If you want to call it art, and think it's brilliant and revolutionary, go right ahead - I won't stop you, and no one else should. Buy it and display it in your yard if you want to. But don't ask me to support your artistic pretensions with a single penny. I wouldn't force you to listen to me droning through modular synth sounds, nor would I force you to fund me, so please extend me the same courtesy.

STILL out of context.

We still appreciate the arts just fine, but the Serranos and Hirsts and Ofilis are trolls. Stinking rich trolls. They make a killing off the bullshiat controversy they gin up. They want some Giuliani to raise a shiatstorm over their pieces being sacrilegious or obscene or whatever, because then they and their dealers and patrons get loads of free publicity and can play the victim all the way to the bank...and all it takes is a drop or two of taxpayer funding.

I'll pay gladly for arts education, especially at the local level, but the bigtime museum directors who okay these shows can go screw themselves for whoring themselves out.

At least a commercial gallery is honest about wanting to sell what it's got on display.

One of these 36-year-old cans of shiat sold for €124,000 last year at Sotheby's.

And Henry has the nerve to say people don't appreciate fine art.
