I'm pretty tired of the whole glad-handy car salesman shtick our leaders seem to have taken to in regard to foreign relations. I mean... if you're president, you could act a little dignified.

I don't think aloof is the worst character trait to have in a president. Seen another way, it can be described as "thoughtful" or "disinterested", which I think we need a lot more of.

Labour's on their way out. Brits are as fed up with them as Americans are with Republicans. Being in power too long is never a good thing.

Sir Nigel seems a bit confused about his assessment of Obama. . .

Ian Faith: Nigel gave me a drawing that said 18 inches. Now, whether or not he knows the difference between feet and inches is not my problem. I do what I'm told.

David St. Hubbins: But you're not as confused as him are you. I mean, it's not your job to be as confused as Nigel.

From the ambassador's letter regarding McCain:

"Mr McCain's speeches are "rambling" and "incoherent", he is "really old" and has "that old person smell" - he also judges that his "policies are, shall we say, 'fluid'" and that if elected he will "start a nuclear war with everyone (even France). "

coco ebert: Labour's on their way out. Brits are as fed up with them as Americans are with Republicans. Being in power too long is never a good thing.

The Brits have an unusual problem - Labour has basically become the "moderate" party, with the Tories too far right for the average person and the Liberal Democrats too left. As a result, the Labour party doesn't really have to demonstrate anything resembling competence, as they know a decent proportion of the public is going to vote for them regardless of whether they deserve it or not.

That and he's hired a CAIR lawyer to try and block the demand he cough up a birth certificate. Yeah that's still not resolved. And apparently just this morning the FBI raided a close Chicago associate of OBama's. So it's started. Should be intereting. Lot of scared career people in Washington stand to be swept out and replaced with new diverse candidates after an Obama victory. I figure the FBI to do it's worse between now and election day. Good on them. These farker has gotten the biggest pass in the history of US politics.

It is hard to call it scathing when it includes bits like the following:

Although the picture Sir Nigel paints is a highly complimentary one - Mr Obama's speeches are "elegant" and "mesmerising", he is "highly intelligent" and has "star quality"...

He wrote approvingly of Mr Obama's "mainstream team of youthful economic advisers, with strong credentials [who] approach policy with refreshingly few prescriptions", his "progressive position on climate change" and his 'pragmatic realism" and "balanced approach to the big security issues".

While I very much like your use of "a loofta" (+2) I must point out the obvious fact that those are Aussies (-1.5) giving you a still respectable net of +0.5.

Both Labour and Tories are centre right parties at this time, and there are only fairly minor policy differences between them, so currently UK politics centres almost entirely around competence, and almost not at all on policy. The Lib Dems are centrist and anti-authoritarian, but have been verging on 'breaking through' and becoming a serious factor for nearly two decades but still haven't, which suggests maybe they won't manage it, unless one of the other parties implodes - which the Tories got close to with all the bickering and leadership changes. A major rift in Labour when they kicked out between at least two of the hard left, the Blairites and the Brownites wouldn't be a massive surprise either.

I always thought of the Lib Dems as a center-right, pro-EU (since the Tories were always weary of the EU), pro-capitalism party that never quite caught on. Kind of like libertarians in the US.

yea, some say he's elite. in America, especially The South, calling you an elitist really is saying you are educated. aloof falls in that same category because so many Americans have been educated on the boob toob. they also went to sorry, underfunded, public schools. that's why they think educated people are elite. i've had people think i'm elite and i take that as a compliment.
