Author whines about lack of updates for AdAware and recommends switching to SpyCop. Link to SpyCop goes to ad offering $20 off if you order by midnight Thursday, January 22, 1998 .

Where's an ironic tag when you need it?

Here ya go DirtyDeadGhostofEbenezerCooke:

That's quite a nick you have there, by the way. Mind if I call you Samuel Clemens instead?

Dan The Serene 2002-12-28 11:11:51 AM
Maybe this kind of exposure will help motivate them in the proper direction.

3horn [TotalFark] 2002-12-28 11:22:12 AM
Version 6 is now three and half weeks overdue, with no explanation of why it is not out yet, or any estimate of when it will be released.

Umm...It's software, it's normal for it to be behind schedule. Particularly freeware.

Does this guy have any idea how overdue a lot of games are? How long have we been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever

Not at all, though most of my friends call me Goaway.

Doh. dammit. That sucks... I love AdAware.

LeroyB 2002-12-28 11:48:44 AM
I used Spybot Search & Destroy a week ago and it found/removed "Gator" -- something I didn't know was lurking in my computer

Ad-aware isn't going anywhere.

http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=8004&category=main

The idiot obviously has near fatal cranial rectitus.

"Please note that all of those except Spybot are affiliates. Purchasing them using the links provided will generate a commission for SpywareInfo. This has nothing to do with their recommendation here. Spybot is the most highly recommended of the four." Yeah right. I hear ya.

GoodyearPimp 2002-12-28 11:52:34 AM
I recommend spybot as well...until the support goes away, anyway.

RE: SpyCop

I think your PC calender is messed up.

For me it says For a limited time we are offering SpyCop Personal for $20.00 off the regular price, if you decide to purchase before midnight Saturday, December 28, 2002.

I think all it does is read the date according to your PC, and spit it out into that paragraph letting you know you could save $20.00! It should work tomorrow too!

Buy now!

MikeWeath 2002-12-28 11:55:49 AM
Lets hope the new AdAware can remove spyware without disabling the software that installed it. I'm sick of updating the filter and manualy replacing files with fake ones to fool the software.

Krojack 2002-12-28 12:07:02 PM
I used ad-aware at first since it did take care of the most obvious of the syph that I had, but it wouldn't remove xupiter, gator, and a few others that spybot S&D did. I removed ad-aware since spybot routinely catches more.

"syphilis free since december"

scraping-fetus-off-the-wheel 2002-12-28 12:08:35 PM
BULL shiat!!

Ad-Aware is coming out with version 6, a total rewrite of the program. It is taking a little longer than they thought it would.

Spybot is another spyware detector/remover program that works a little differently.

I would almost call this astroturfing by the original MeFi poster, but someone didn't research as well as they should have. And the mistake was pointed out quickly in the MeFi thread.

rpm 2002-12-28 12:08:56 PM
MikeWeath, that's not particularly easy depending on how the software checks (e.g., is it a simple "is the file there?" or does it actually use code from it or does it cryptographically check to make sure the file is valid). It's probably borderline illegal as well, since if it was installed with other software and mentioned in the EULA, you agreed to it's presence in a potentially valid contract.

brywalker 2002-12-28 12:09:48 PM
This is funny.

AR AR AR AR AR AR AR AR AR!

Midian 2002-12-28 12:13:55 PM
Eula or not, most people don't read them and most EULA's don't describe exactly what the program will do (unlike friendgreet ;)

Spyware is garbage! Spybot rules.

rpm 2002-12-28 12:15:00 PM
Krojack, how much is Spybot paying you?

I've used the free version of adaware on many people's computers and it's always ripped gator out by the roots.

AChimp 2002-12-28 12:21:11 PM
OH NO! You mean a company might not be telling us the reason why they're behind schedule?! Could it be that they're too busy?

NO! It must be a conspiracy!

WTF. That author needs to smash his head into a brick wall a few times. So what if he get rid of the "latest ads." Maybe if he stopped visiting porn sites or stopped clicking "yes" all the time he wouldn't have any problems with spyware. Why is it that I can clean my system off with AdAware, surf for two weeks, then run AdAware again and have it not turn up anything?

Spyware's not all that bad, either. Don't store your credit card number and personal info on your computer, it's as simple as that. If you don't like it, stop surfing the net until the new version comes out. fark.

Aeonite [TotalFark] 2002-12-28 12:22:43 PM
You'll all be laughing when Spybot takes over the world and releases Terminators to slay all mankind.

Or was that Skynet?

IwishIwasCool 2002-12-28 12:26:39 PM
I hate xupiter with a passion. Adaware does not touch it even with the refupdate.

rpm 2002-12-28 12:29:38 PM
DDGEC, I think it's more Spybot's embarassment, not yours.

If they use Javascript to create "coupons" that expire "today", that implies to me dirty marketing tricks. I wouldn't trust any program that requires crap like that to sell it anyhere near computers that I own or control.

WRONG

We are however notifying you (our customers and the general public) that we have entered into the late stages of beta testing. Except for some minor polishing and some last minute initial bug fixes, we are nearly done and should be ready to release Ad-aware 6 to our customers mid January 2003 and to our freeware users at the beginning of February 2003. Please be patient and we are confident that when you see what we have to offer you will understand AND appreciate the time taken to make it the best solution available!

Yay!

SoulAssassin 2002-12-28 12:34:05 PM
If I should uninstall Adaware 5.83 because they're 3 weeks behind on the new version then I guess it's time to uninstall Duke Nukem 3D.

This guy is a freakin' idiot.

Sure - and while I'm at it, I'll just store yours on mine.

Did you miss the personal part of the phrase "personal computer"?

TommyymmoT [TotalFark] 2002-12-28 12:43:00 PM
I dunno, 5.83 pulled Xupiter out of mine. It seems I can go to a bunch of "fringe" sites, and come away clean. Yet when I go to the "mainstream" ones, I just assume gator was installed. I just tried spybot though. I liked it. It corrected alot of junk that I picked up on Winmx. I'm keeping both of them.

hobbitgh0d42 2002-12-28 12:48:19 PM
IwishIwasCool- Did you ever think that you shouldn't have clicked the little IE window box saying 'This website wants to install a component'. thats how most ppl get spyware these days... I get about 10 of them a day (one game cheat site uses them)

EverStoned 2002-12-28 12:49:11 PM

Damn straight! They're both great apps!

BillCo [TotalFark] 2002-12-28 12:52:52 PM
OK, so I'm no a total computer geek like some of my brethren here, but is there any reason not to run both AdAware and SpyBot? Each only takes a couple of minutes to run and one may catch something the other doesn't. I do need an occasional break to either take in or get rid of beer.

scraping-fetus-off-the-wheel 2002-12-28 12:58:54 PM
Yes, there is some spyware for the Mac, and yes, there is a spyware remover for the Mac.

Google, look into it.

BillCo [TotalFark] 2002-12-28 12:59:49 PM
Gee thanks Abby. I feel much better now that I know I'm too much of a tard to even be using a computer. Guess I'll just go watch a movie or blow my brains out or maybe make some cookies. Any preferences?

IwishIwasCool 2002-12-28 01:00:18 PM
Hobbitgh0d42: Are you serious? All these years in IT and I had no idea that was possible!

rhiannon [TotalFark] 2002-12-28 01:05:05 PM
AbbyNormal: Yeah but can I run Bonzi Buddy on OS X? 'Cause I, duh, can't do without my Bonzi Buddy.

ScottMpls 2002-12-28 01:05:59 PM
BillCo, I'm not a computer "geek" either, but considering how much time I spend online for business/boredom reasons, I try to stay up on security/privacy issues. I use Ad-Aware and Spybot, as both seem to target different things. I haven't had any problems with them. However, some of my "techie" friends complain about one or both, as they tend to tweak them or go beyond the standard installations.

absinthe 2002-12-28 01:07:57 PM
Hopefully Fark will post a followup including the link to Lavasoft's forum post. Or not...

DBCooper 2002-12-28 01:12:37 PM
BillCo

Make the cookies while watching a movie. Leave them somewhere we can get them. Then blow your brains out.

Well, you asked.

Midian 2002-12-28 01:18:23 PM
Wave your hand if you missed the point.

Ad-Aware 5.83 currently removes CommonNames incorrectly which hoses your winsock, killing your internet connection.

A program that works improperly is worse than a program that doesn't work at all.

Go with Spybot. It's fast, it's free, it works.

scraping-fetus-off-the-wheel 2002-12-28 01:25:02 PM
Wave your hand if you don't know how to use a program correctly.

Ad-Aware gives you the option to backup things before you delete them.

Wave your hand if you missed the point.

The link is false.

Yay! We're all happier than AbbyNormal!

aggrop 2002-12-28 01:36:45 PM
OK, so I decided to try the Bot. No how in the fark do I completely remove ad-aware?!?!

Please help me, someone! There seems to be no uninstall...

Help me dude!

beerbaron 2002-12-28 01:38:26 PM
What I want to know is where are these bashturds from xupiter? I would like to find thier planet and detonate a thermonuclear device. I can't find anything about them on the net. The feds should be busting down their doors and siezing equipment! What about a class action lawsuit? Or are all these operators offshore in some farking former eastern bloc country where the law is just another facet of the organized crime scene?
