I hate to put this in teh boobs but I truly, utterly, deeply loathe this boring ersatz song and the still near-constant airplay of it.

/twitch, twitch, shudder

Speaking of torture, that reminds me of the scene in Penn and Teller Get Killed.

I will be waiting for you next time you're out at your local watering hole. I will saunter over to the jukebox, drop in $20, select that song over and over and over again!

/Can music save your mortal soul?

No need - select it once, and it plays for like 6 hours or something...

That song is too long and too rhymey, is that a word? And Madonna did her best to make it even worse!

I liked the song when I was 15. I stopped liking it when I was 18 and no longer felt impressed by all of the transparent symbolism. It's basically Dylan for kindergartners.

I also passionately disagree with the message of the song.

A better song by McLean: Bronco Bill's Lament

I'd say I was the same way, more or less. But what exactly is the overall message of the song?

I was always upset that she didn't sing all the lyrics. I was dying to hear her sing "February made me shiver, with every paper I delivered." just to laugh at the image of Madonna delivering newspapers.

Recorded and released in 1971, the original version is still playing on your dad's record player.

/does this song never end?

I don't like it. It's a sh*tty song. Sorry if you can't deal with that.

It sucks that so many people associate Buddy Holly with this pretentious, over-long piece of shiat song instead of his own infinitely more awesome work.

The message is that rock music ultimately died when it stopped being happy fun music to play at sock hops.

I thought it was that the Rolling Stones were Satanists and that the Beatles were Communists.

The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were among the villains that helped kill rock music by making it less about music to play at sock hops. Same with Hendrix.

I agree that this song is crappy and overlong, but as an audiophile I did enjoy the video. It clued me in on some things in the song I never considered before.
video +1
song -2

I'm another person who loves the song.

Was the pink carnation part a nod to Marty Robbins' White Sport Coat And Pink Carnation, or is it coincidence?

The explanation of the song is wrong for some parts.

Tommy Allsup and Waylon Jennings were supposed to be on the plane.
Allsup lost a coin toss to Valens and Jennings gave up his seat to Richardson because J.P. was sick and didn't want to take a long bus ride.

During the early morning hours of February 3, 1959, the charter airplane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (aka "The Big Bopper") crashed outside Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all on board. In his 1996 autobiography, Jennings admitted that in the years afterward, he felt severe guilt and responsibility for the crash; after Jennings gave up his seat, Holly had jokingly told Jennings, "I hope your ole bus freezes up!" Jennings shot back facetiously, "I hope your damn plane crashes!"

I still appreciate "...Pie", always liked Driedel, and I still get a tear in my eye every time I hear Vincent. Great voice, great stylist, good wordsmith. Don's okay by me.
