you can never know enough about the "mathematics" of composition.

Meh, music is a little too subjective to really be called mathematics. It's more like psychology. Certain sequences of notes and chords may or may not prompt certain feelings in the average listener, and each composer has his or her own set of quirks and idiosyncrasies. I guess if you want to get into the way frequencies relate to each other, or the history of music technology, then mathematics would be a relatively large factor. But you can never pin music down to an exact science like mathematics. Those who try are doomed, DOOMED, I tell you!

Yeah, Flea is quite silly for comparing music to mathematics. That comparison has only been made since, well, before Pythagoras.

/And here I thought you could just program a computer and out pops a Beethoven composition. Very enlightening.

Why yes, yes you can.

I'm gonna start bringing my calculator to band practice...just in case I come up with something complicated.

Well you can, but you have to put the Beethoven composition in to begin with.

Anyone with two semesters of either applied mathematics or music theory would tell you that's balderdash.

Ever hear of the Circle of Fifths?

Tonic, dominant, subdominant, relative minor, er, all these things are actually mathematical descriptions using letters - go figure. I'm 57, I've been playing music since I was 2, was a classically trained opera singer and play virtually any instrument and I can assure you that the thinking is very mathematical, in a subjective way.

What exactly are you listening to maestro that in your book Flea is only "slightly above average".

Wait, I know. You're Geddy Lee right?

The post is 5% information and 95% self promotion... NICE JOB! Too bad we aren't taking applications for prodigies right now but we will keep your resume on file.

Indian music is largely based on mathematical progressions. Unfortunately, the math is too rigidly enforced, and the music ends up sounding like crap.

While there isn't an exact formula for "good song", the basis of music theory and harmony is very much mathematical.

Are we reading any of the other words in the article yet or are we just sticking with "mathematics"?

Good on him, already a better-than-average musician in the pop world, for wanting to stretch his knowledge in a disciplined environment.

Flea's a tiny little man, about 5' nothing but can play bass like a madman. He has skills but not much knowledge. Met him once, was quite an interesting little fella.

Shawn Lane was a very large man, could play anything. Lots of skill lots of knowledge. We once had a conversation about the mathematics of music. He was extremely intelligent and most of his shredding was mathematic and pattern based.

Musical notes are oscillations, cycles per second.

Rhythmic patterns are mathematic equations.

Whole note / 2 = half note

Eighth note / 2 = sixteenth note

Not hard to understand at all. Everything is mathematical in some way, form, or manner.

Much like everything can be linked to Kevin Bacon in six steps.

Kevin Bacon was in Sleepers with Brad Pitt who was in Ocean's 11 with George Clooney who was in O'Brother, Where Art Thou? with John Turturro who was in The Big Lebowski with Flea.

/Quick and dirty.
//Not sure if you can use the same director/producer back to back though. May have broken a rule.

I love how he strides into his bass playing.

He's got this swagger when he's playing that makes it appear that he really knows how to fark.

So was Phil Lesh. Weird world.

And yeah, Flea played the trumpet part on Pretty Little Ditty near the end.

Flea co-founded a music school in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles called The Silverlake Conservatory of Music (new window) (it's in Sunset Junction, next to Intelligensia Coffee for you LA Farkers). I'm very sure Mr. Balzary is going to SC music school to sharpen his teaching skills for his school. that, and I'm sure he wants to catch some Trojans games.
