NikolaiFarkoff: Does Bowser still eat at the Carnegie Deli?

I woke up around 4:30 AM someday last week to hear him hawking the ultimate oldies but goodies collection. I've kicked myself for not having turned off the TV before, but this was the first time I wanted to travel out of state to set someone on fire for being on my TV.

I've seen that, also in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep.

I, too, have seen that promo and wondered to myself if he gets some sort of deal on Ron Popeil's "spray on hair" or black hair dye?

I saw Sha na na in the 70's when they were opening for someone (I don't even remember who), but they were awesome and stole the show. Definitely designed for stoners, probably why they went over so well at Woodstock.

As I heard it, the only reason Sha Na Na got the Woodstock gig was
that they were friends with the organizers, and they thought it
would be a hoot.

I had always assumed that "The 50s" were brought back by...
- 1973: American Graffiti (technically the 60s)
- 1974: Happy Days
- 1978: Grease

I was not aware that Sha-Na-Na came first.

I'm still not sure why I care.

Sha-Na-Na... shot Kennedy
Sha-Na-Na... stabbed that guy at Altamont
Sha-Na-Na... started the Peace Corps
Sha-Na-Na... were the first Astronauts
Sha-Na-Na... joined the Black Panthers
Sha-Na-Na... led student sit-ins
Sha-Na-Na... grew organic food
Sha-Na-Na... just never fit in

You can move to Montana and listen to Santana
But you still won't be as cool as Sha-Na-Na

I saw Sha Na Na way back in the early 70's. They were very good at 1950's era Do-Wop and they put on a very professional and enjoyable show. No they weren't some great musical innovators, but they were good.....and entertaining!

Saw then any number of times during the late 70's and early 80's. They always had a good show.

/the shtick on the commercial is pretty lame, though.

Sha-na-na never struck me as being anything other than a cheesy-ass lounge act. Just horrible.

Then I saw the awesome and fascinating documentary film, Festival Express, which included one of their early performances. I had no idea they used to be that...cool. Seriously.

Rent that disc. It's an amazing movie.

Dion hates their guts.

Saw Dion on Tom Snyder's CNBC show one night years ago. Some caller asked Dion about Sha Na Na, and Dion gave Sha Na Na hell for 5 minutes without stopping to breathe. Great rant.

My perceptions of the Fifties were formed via "Back To The Future."

My perceptions of the Sixties were formed during the Nineties when it seemed there was a Sixties retro-revival. Were The Doors really as popular in the Eighties as they were the Nineties? Honestly, it seems like the Sixties were glorified quite a bit in the Nineties. Or maybe that is just when I became old enough to notice societal things.

But now we have this Eighties revival, at least musically. Well, I guess we had 8 years of a political Eighties revial, co-starring Cheney and others, but you have these bands using synths in a way that isn't even supposed to be ironic (LCD Soundsystem is one that comes to mind).

What the hell am I talking about... eh, I'm hungry. No sociologist. Just a hungry guy with a Fark account.

/Festival Express IS a good movie.

They were awesome in Festival Express... probably the best performance in the movie. They reminded me of the Ramones... about 5 years before the Ramones.

Opened for Hendrix at Woodstock??? I don't think so. Nobody opened for Hendrix. Woodstock started on Friday and ended on Monday. Wasn't it John Sebastian or Ritchie Havens that opened it?

Ritchie Havens opened and Hendrix Closed. Sha-Na-Na immediately proceeded Hendrix. they were nearly booed off the stage by the remaining 20,000 so people on the morning of day four. Hendrix insisted on going last (or at least his management did) because he was the "headliner" (even though everybody was a headliner).

some other bands that also "opened" for Jimi at the 'stock

CCR
Mountain
Janis/Full Tilt Boogie Band
Johnny Winter
The Grateful Dead

My lovely wife's first concert was the Monkees.

Jimi Hendrix opened.

Remember Marty McFly's solo in BttF? Same crowd reaction.

Lemme see if I got this: An Ivy League Glee Club influences American Culture, leading to a broad belief in better days, let's call them 'Happy Days', which leads to a yearning in conservative America for some, and just 'Good Times' for others, which of course, when confronted with the 'Facts of Life', leads to a more bonded family unit, a 'Family Tie(s)' if you will, which is deliciously counter-pointed in the Michael Douglas / Charlie Sheen big screen adaptation of 'Wall Street' (in which a then still young Fox had no association with), and incidentally, lead to deregulation of Debt-to-Asset provisions in the lending markets, and, accordingly, lead to the total collapse of the U.S. economy.
