They're really sticking with the old rocker theme after the whole boob thing.

I guess what I'm saying is bring back the half time boob.

That guy must miss the the 80s.

Nobody gives a sh*t any more except for a couple of fat guys in Jersey.

Go Bruce!

2. at least it's not Aerosmith
3. ex-lax Bruce, it's called ex-lax

All the songs he performs will be from The Ghost of Tom Joad, angering fans expecting to hear "Born to Run".

Is the Super Bowl halftime show ever going to have somebody who's not 30 years past their prime?

Mr_Fabulous 2008-09-29 10:03:46 AM
Hmmmm...a 4-song set list might look like this:

1. Radio Nowhere
2. Born to Run
3. Born in the USA
4. Badlands

Maybe replace one of them with a good cover, like "Twist & Shout" or something.

/top of my head

oryx: Is the Super Bowl halftime show ever going to have somebody who's not 30 years past their prime?

Easy now.....Petty put on a rockin show last year, not a fan of Prince or the wardrobe malfunctioners, but I think (as evidenced by my Fark handle) that the Boss is an excellent choice for the halftime show. He puts on a great, enthusiastic live concert, and for him being 58 years old--he can still bring it, night after night after night!

Nice set list! Even though Born in the USA is musically far from one of his best, I think he has to play it to appeal to the casual Boss fan, and even some of those that don't like him, but like that song.

Marisyana 2008-09-29 10:30:36 AM
Hmm ... four song set.

1. Born In The USA
2. A song from his new record
3. The Rising
4. Born To Run (because you can't top Born To Run)

ethbone 2008-09-29 10:43:19 AM
I hope he just plays Jungleland.

strongbadd 2008-09-29 11:21:48 AM
Just play "Thunder Road" in it's entirety.

Trainspotr 2008-09-29 11:44:04 AM
ethbone: I hope he just plays Jungleland.

I'd like that, maybe 15 minutes of Jungleland, then 15 minutes of Rosalita.
Here's my list:

1) Thunder Road
2) Hungry Heart
3) Radio Nowhere
4) Blinded by the Light
5) Born to Run

Or, he could go for the most depressing Super Bowl set list ever:
1) Darkness on the Edge of Town
2) My Hometown
3) Wreck on the Highway
4) Streets of Philadelphia
5) The River

rocknrollpetrol 2008-09-29 12:10:44 PM
He'll just come out with an acoustic and do Mary Queen Of Arkansas.

BiscuitsForSmut 2008-09-29 12:17:24 PM
Well at least I'll have a solid 30 minutes to get something else to eat while this clown is on.

Ah, the sad lament of someone who has never seen "this clown" live in concert or its the political grumblings of a Republican angry at the Boss for his part in the Rock against Bush tour. Don't know which one you are, but neither is working. Try spending 30 minutes (as said earlier by my boy Trainspotr ) listening to Lost in the Flood, Jungleland, Rosalita, Born to Run, Thunder Road....if it takes you over 30 mins (which it will), you'll have spent that extra time listening to really solid music. You won't regret it.

Nobody "plays" the half time show. The instruments shouldn't even be plugged in.

Sigmund 2008-09-29 01:08:09 PM
He'll just play a 30-minute version of "The River", including a 10-minute story about a conversation he had with his Dad when he was younger.

\Bruuuuuuuuce!

THIS.

What a yawner. Bruce wasn't that great in the 1970's. He got more boring as the years passed.

Let's see Metallica for halftime. They're nearly washed up enough and if they play their old stuff, it'll freaking rock.

It gets easier every day to understand why your country is as farked up as it is.

Or I could lament over the fact he's cheap copy of Joe Strummer without the fire or the passion. I'd rather save that time listening to the tracks you recommended and put on London Calling.

As for not seeing him live. Think again man of all answers. I've went to not one but two shows in East Rutherford and came away thinking "meh". I dont care for him or his incredibly stale "for the common man" gimmick. If he was such a working class hero like he plays it to be, the tickets wouldnt cost a small fortune.

For the same money I could have seen KISS who put on a FAR better show for the money.

Maybe because Bruce and Tom Petty 30 years past their prime still blow the doors off of any band of this generation.

Who's the quintessential major draw, arena band of this generation? The Killers? Coldplay? Yeesh.

What's to know? That I dont want to hear another great anecdote about Bruce's father wiping his ass when he was a kid?

I know, maybe I should drive around in a convertible with the top down and blast "Born in the USA" and then i'll get the big picture.

Is it a big enough picture to hold all tears from people crying about how great he is?

The boss?? The BOSS??? Impossible. Maynard Ferguson passed away a few years ago.

U-S-A!! U-S-A!

Football and alcohol deserve a much harder yet equally American soundtrack. I recommend Slayer. Reign in Blood and South of Heaven repeated each half should, as they say, get 'er done.

Clash City Farker 2008-09-29 10:38:26 PM
Strummer > The Boss.

First the Boss will write a song about how he hates cops, then after 9/11 he will write a song about how great they are. Jeez, which is it?

To the rest of the world, Jersey = America. No wonder we are hated.

Good to know Im not the only one who knows Strummer is 1000x more legit.

InmanRoshi 2008-09-30 09:44:34 AM
Strummer may be more "legit" (for whatever that's worth), but he never held a candle to Bruce as a songwriter (not that's any huge insult, as few people can). That much became apparent when he split with Jones.

Trash City
Baby The Trans
Johnny Appleseed
X-Ray Style
Long Shadow
Coma Girl
Afro-Cuban Bebop

I'd say his post Jones work is just as patchy as Springsteen's post-BintheUSA work (an album heavily inspired by the Clash, believe it or not), but the above songs are all as good as any Strummer/Jones composition. I think the real point here is that we're splitting hairs over two musical greats who we should just agree are both awesome.

All of you dissing Springsteen have never heard "Incident on 57th Street." Album version, full band live version, solo acoustic version -- I don't care. If that song doesn't give you chills, then you're dead inside.

/"Thunder Road," too. But that just goes without saying.
