Broke in to steal stuff (as far as I know....we weren't home), and stabbed the dogs. Never caught the assholes either. The police wouldn't even finger print. Needless to say, I have a different perspective on home defense and the right to bear arms than most.

I carry a Bersa .380 around in public and have a Hi-Point .40 for home / car / hiking. I know a .380 will deliver a lethal shot, but a .40 has enough energy behind it that an adrenaline-fueled tunnel-visioned shot to the elbow or shoulder or leg will be enough to knock them back a little bit. The crackheads and meth users who make up the majority of my neighborhood probably wouldn't notice a shot by the .380 until they were dead, but the .40 will do the job.

Come to think of it, I might go get some +P+ on the .40 just to see how they handle. Never fired 'em.

Restraining Orders are a waste of time in almost all cases. Read "A Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker, and get an appreciation for the way the system doesn't work.

.40 is a modern load and all manufacturers load that cartridge to optimal ballistics.

Being a liberal Democrat, I'm often annoyed when I hear conservatives say we want to take their guns away. I favor background checks and waiting periods, but beyond that I think any American adult who passes the background check ought to have the right to own a gun.

Restraining orders aren't completely useless but they're certainly ineffective as protection. They are useful for legal recourse if the subject of the order breaks it. However, if that subject is looking to harm you, it won't do dick and a firearm is your best protection.

Now, I haven't been able to find any +P .380. I've read a lot about how JHP .380 is not really beneficial because the bullet doesn't hit the target with enough force to really mushroom out the head. But it would seem that a +P JHP would do the trick, and I seem to recall the Bersa Tunder .380 being +P rated.
