That's a pretty apt metaphor for the bailout.

my next door neighbor did this with his zoysia grass every spring.

They did this at Oklahoma State when I went there. It looked very tacky.

They used to do this in the military (USAF) all the time...

They've been doing this a lot at the end of summer since we have a water shortage out here. With more foreclosures, it makes even more sense to keep riff raffs out of the communities. But yeah, i know it's weird to the rest of the country, but this is just normal california summer.

Had a neighbor that did this. Eventually, he gravelled his yard, and painted it green, and turned his lawnmower into a flowerpot in the center of the yard. It went downhill from there, toilet flowerpots, etc. The civic organization finally went all legal on him, and he had to re-sod the yard. Us kids thought it was funny though.

This has been common practice in many dry areas for years now.

Looks horrible. I prefer the look of a dead lawn myself... there's something characteristically autumnal of it.

I disagree with your detractors. This is one of the few recent, original Bush jokes I've heard in ages. +1 from me.

Get over it, people. Political jokes are still funny, no matter which side you're on, if they're funny in the first place.

I was gonna make a 'grass is always greener' remark, but that'd be lame.

Yes, and then you can have it look like a football field all year long

Poochner 2008-09-28 09:00:50 PM
As a historical note, some institutions (hospitals, retirement homes, etc) spray paint their grass in the winter because it makes the people happier. If they use the right shade, it looks okay. One hospital I know of used to use that hydroseed stuff that's green spray-on seed, and go to some winter-tolerant type of grass. Then go back to a heat-tolerant one in the spring as the winter was dieing.

Look man, we all make a lame comment every now and again. It happens. You don't have to go full retard, and start spattering 3rd grade comebacks everywhere. Take it with grace, smile, nod, and remember to be quiet when grown folk are speaking.

Old news. They were doing this in Santa Barbara over a decade ago, during a lengthy drought.

pdieten 2008-09-28 09:23:17 PM
I just spent a couple thousand dollars getting my lawn put in, so I'm not getting a kick out of these replies. I could have just spent $200 painting the dirt green......

/hydroseeding FTW; the lawn sprouted five days after it was sprayed.

aerojockey [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 09:34:14 PM
Yellow grass is not sick, it's the grass's natural response in dry conditions. (OTOH sometimes yellow grass is dead grass having had it roots munched up by grubs.)

I remember growing up in suburban OKC and seeing this happen every year. Tacky, indeed.

bmihura 2008-09-28 09:55:34 PM
I prefer to keep my yard brown, as I live in TX, where that is the natural state of the grass most of the year.

Bonus: It makes giving directions to my place SO much easier. "Drive about two blocks until you see the brown yard on the left."

And I don't waste any water! The last time I watered my yard was in 1996, when I first bought the place. I wanted to see if the sprinkler system worked. It did. I bet it doesn't now, 12 years later.

They did this in Boca Raton like thirteen years ago. My brother played in the midget football league and they painted the field green. So much fun to cheerlead on :)

iheartbaconsalt [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 10:07:25 PM
This is the most awesome thing ever. But why green? It sounds like a new way to "Keep Austin Weird" by painting your lawn in multiple colors! Is there a paint that's safe for painting the ground?

Get Lost 2008-09-28 10:29:18 PM
I painted my lawn p ......Actually I ripped out my lawn and put in gravel and plants.

Don't live in a Nazi green grass enforcement area. And would wipe out such fascists.

How is this legal? Are they required to disclose to the buyer they've tried to hide that the lawn they're selling is dead and will require thousands of dollars to fix?

Ima4nic8or 2008-09-28 10:41:12 PM
I am tempted to pay to have the yard of the house across the street from me done. The owners abandoned it a month or so ago, leaving it for the bank. Now the lawn is all brown.

rewind2846 2008-09-28 10:51:21 PM
Hey guess what? Here's an idea... how about lowering the price of the house so that a regular working person can afford to buy it without selling a kidney? They can water the grass all day and you won't need to spray the ground with PAINT.

/I know, I know
//look! Flying butt monkeys!

Kral: How is this legal? Are they required to disclose to the buyer they've tried to hide that the lawn they're selling is dead and will require thousands of dollars to fix?

Depending on how much work you're willing to do, it really doesn't cost that much. You can rent a thatcher and aerator for about $50 a day, then get a test kit from Home Depot to determine the Ph of your soil. Generally a good dosing with lime will fix sour, untended soil. Since everything's dead, it's a good time to install a sprinkler system, and a well if you're really adventurous. Scedule 40 PVC is pretty cheap, and sprinkler heads aren't an arm and a leg either. you can get an electronic timer to make everything self sufficient. Once the soil is sweet enough, drop a few hundred dollars on GOOD grass seed, not crappy contractor mix. Living on the east coast, I use Pennington or Rebel fescue. It's great in the spring and fall, but does get a little brown in the summer. Overseed in the fall (I just overseeded last weekend) and wait. Water in the evening, and early morning so the water actually gets on the seed, rather than all evaporating right away. A good lawn takes a while to cultivate, but if you take the time, it's not too hard to have the best yard in the neighborhood.

/yes, my lawn IS nice isn't it
//get off it

It's usually pretty obvious that it has been done and the article said they charge the new owners for it when they buy the home so I'm assuming it is disclosed in the paperwork.

"It's a win, win for everybody. For banks, the city, realtors, even neighborhoods because we keep them looking nice," said Terlouw.

How do you assume painting green on the grass is a win win for everybody? I doubt, even if anyone buys that property, will actually grass ever grow there again.
