I have two black dogs and a black cat, all adopted. Why are people so ignorant?

This does not explain why 78.4% of the pet owners I know have a black lab. Seems every other house in my neighborhood has one. Is there a more popular dog or color?

This is Shade. She's a black cocker spaniel, one of 2 in the litter (of 5). There was never a question of getting one of others.

In the people adoption world people are racist.

Try saying you don't want to hire a brown person or a female, try saying you don't want to rent to an old or handicapped person...Outrage. But specify that you are only interested in adopting a white male in good health and under 6 months, and nobody bats an eye. Why is discrimination ok when it comes to adoption?

corgic [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 06:14:04 PM
Black Labs are among the most popular dogs people buy. They are also often turned in to shelters because of their high energy and penchant for chewing. Couple this with the fact that hunters rarely spay or neuter their dogs, you end up with a whole lot of big black dogs in shelters. Then of course there is the problem of stupidity- people are often shocked to discover that labs routinely get to be 60 lbs or more, and require training, so they just dump them.

Sorry for the rant, it pisses me off that my shelter has to euthanize almost 1000 animals a month because people can't be bothered with them any more

Il Douchey: Why is discrimination ok when it comes to adoption?

Because when it comes to adoption, most people would rather see a family with a kid that 'matches' because they're less likely to have strife that way.

Personally, I'm looking forward to one day having room to adopt a few more dogs.

But the kid has much more strife by going unchosen, -he's been discriminated. Besides, nobody is concerned about the employer or the landlord's strife when they aren't allowed to discriminate. Just seems hypocritical; either it's wrong and should be forbidden or it isn't.

I don't disagree with you. That sentence I typed was written with the worst taste you can possibly imagine in my mouth. I am as white as they come, and my baby sister is very, very dark brown. Do not mistake me for someone who thinks everybody in a family should match. :)

Meet seeing eye puppy Leah. She's so good they're making her a breeder instead of a seeing eye dog.

This is Dog Vader. When we got him form the rescue the foster owner was crying because it was his first show and she was sure it was going to take a long time to get him adopted out. They had never seen a big black dog go so fast. Now he was a puppy but his paws were enormous. For reference those are size 12 shoes in the background.

We just rescued a cat today too. BEAUTIFUL Russian Blue named Marco. Someone stuck him and four siblings in a box and threw them in the river. Some lady saw it floating past her boat and rescued them. They were just born with their cords still attached. I'm trying to get the family to agree to change it's horrible name but no luck yet.

Because one is business and the other is family. I wouldn't have a problem if a black family only wanted to adopt a black baby. I don't see why the opposite is so horrible.

darkhorse23: I have two black dogs and a black cat, all adopted. Why are people so ignorant?

RTFA and your own glaring ignorance will be diminished:

Black dogs are much more difficult to photograph - their eyes blend in with the color of their fur, so it's difficult for someone looking for a dog on the Internet to feel a connection, said Mr. Hurst, who with wife Vicki fosters dogs that need homes.

Then there are perceptions.

Big, black dogs remind many people of guard dogs. And if there's a menacing dog in a film, chances are it's black - like The Grim in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

English folklore is filled with tales of big black dogs haunting the moors and prowling graveyards.

"It's a stereotype," said Jonnie England, a longtime leader in pet rescue, "and the animals suffer."

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with Subtard's racism claim.

BWAHAHAAHA!!! XD!!! Awwwww!!!!

He looks JUST like mah fuzzy buddy boy Nermal! He's 14, acts like he's 4, and spoiled rotten to the core. We like to torture him sometimes by holding him like a baby while Gentry the dilute calico goes to town primping his head. Then after about a minute he enjoys it.

I have a ninety-two pound black dog from the SPCA. He's fantastic.

Oddly, some people get out of the way when we're walking down the street. I really ought to shower more often.

A lot of it is due to the prejudices of the adoption agencies. My wife and I have been trying to adopt for a while. The state tried very hard to steer us away from adopting either a black or Hispanic child. We told them we had no preferences, nevertheless, I got a new case worker, and just the other day she called to introduce herself and stated that my file said interested white adoption.
BTW, every single worker with child protective services here is either black or Hispanic and they are all female, at least every one I ever met.

/THey also suck and don't help you

I have given up with them and I am trying for international adoption.

I could see that, except a lot of these people are happy to have an Asian baby, just not a black one. My aunt was like this- it really pissed me off. She was talking about going to China to adopt a little girl. When I asked why she didn't just get a kid here, she said the only ones she could get without a waiting list are black. She doesn't think of herself as racist at all. When I tell her an Asian kid is just as obviously adopted as a black child, she's like "uhm... pancakes." These are sweet, innocent, less than 2.5 year old children we are talking about. I just don't get it, I guess.

All of those explanations sound remarkably like the reasons I hear for people not liking black folks. They look "intimidating," dark skinned and dark haired people are typically those portrayed as villains, they don't appear as "soft," etc.

I had a black lab mix for 14 years until he died of a stroke. He was the gentlest and most loving companion animal of any kind I've ever had. We adopted him when my son was 2 years old and they were best buddies. He was born in the shelter we got him from, and was 9 months old when we took him. The shelter workers held onto him because they knew he'd be a great dog for a family, and he certainly was.

Great watchdog, too - huge bark - no one wanted to come near when they heard that big bark, but he never bit or even growled. He did his job in every way.

RIP Billy

The other problem with solid black dogs is that when people walk down the runs, the black ones just don't stand out.

Love samoyeds. My dog growing up was a samoyed. They're known for being neurotic & very unfriendly towards children though so apparently people are weary of adopting them. My dog was super friendly towards everyone but she was a bit neurotic. She lived to a ripe old age of 16.
