Saw them at Red Rocks last night... what a show!

/not subby

What the hell does that headline mean?

I have seen Radiohead: I know Radiohead; Radiohead are on my playlist. Sigur Ros, you're no Radiohead.

/I did enjoy the track though, thanks sūbb y

If you like Sigur Ros you should buy the Heima DVD..

Trailer here (new window)

They toured all of Iceland unannounced except for the day before the show. That way they could keep the audiences limited to just the locals, as a way to pay them back for supporting them all these years.

The DVD is phenomenal, and the scenery captured by the film crew is incredible as well.

If you ever get a chance, visit Iceland. It'll change your life.

Big crescendo at about 2:34 sends shivers down my spine every time.

Video is from some now-cancelled music show on HBO (circa 2001) that had very well-filmed live performances from a variety of acts - wish it (or something similar) was still on the air.

CtrlAltDelete [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 06:36:52 PM
I see they played the short version.

Seriously, when I saw them open for Radiohead it seemed like this song went on forever.

They're a great group, but it's much like Godspeed You Black Emperor! in that people start the show standing and waving back and forth and grooving to the music, and ten minutes into the first song they're sitting down because... well, what are you supposed to do?

floor9 [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 06:43:00 PM
Any time you want to impress any self-professed indie girl, just mention something about Sigur Ros and Michel Gondry and how mainstream media "just doesn't get it". For bonus points, talk about how you liked They Might Be Giants until they sold out.

Unbelievable band. If you think they are great in studio, you will be blown away by them live. I saw them at Bonnaroo and going into the show I had high expectations and they shattered every expectation I had for them. It was unreal. I was in a trance and was fixated on the stage for two hours and loved every moment of it.

Yes, to all of this yes, yes.

Radiohead sounding like Motorhead would be awesome.

Evidently they put on a great live show (according to you all), which shocks me a bit. I love listening to Sigur Ros in the background while doing other stuff on the 'puter, but really can't imagine I'd enjoy going to see them play an hour-long set where they'd be the focus of my attention.

the popularity of Sigur Ros kind of perplexes me. They're well within my realm of taste, but they bore the ever loving fark out of me. Some post-rock bands may need singers, Sigur Ros is proof most don't.

Already Disturbed 2008-09-28 08:18:32 PM
they were amazing at MoMA

ErikShocker 2008-09-28 08:45:12 PM
I was just invited to see this band in Tempe for Tuesday, so this is totally weird and coincidental.

/that being said, I'm going to check them out

Jedekai 2008-09-28 08:46:04 PM
Ahhh, Sigur Ros.

Excellent comparison to Radiohead, by the way.
Because they make me want to slit my wrists at half the speed of "Karma Police".

Best Icelandic band:

Solstafir:

farm3.static.flickr.com

Masterpiece of Bitterness: Farking amazing

/In another pinnacle of Wikipedia FAIL: lists Quarashi as being from Iceland - they're originally from Norway - they record in Iceland.

best group I've ever seen live. while their studio work comes across dreaming and relaxed, the live experience is amazing. jealous I didn't get to see them on this year's tour... MoMa looked amazing

they had more than a few....
if you meant the "islands"/"earthbound" incarnation i might have to slightly agree.... but the "Greg Lake" and "Wetton / Bruford" incarnations kicked major ass...... the "Levin/Belew" was pretty cool as well...

That is a pretty bold statement for someone who later claims to know "more" about musicianship, so I went a-YouTubing for Muse. Let me tell ya something, Poindexter. Muse is pop with pedals. They couldn't shine Fripp's shoes. Belew could do more with three strings than that crew does with three chords.

what did you listen to? they are a far thing from pop, try butterflies and hurricanes wembley version.

Matt Bellamy is tons more talented then Fripp, hes a virtuoso on piano and guitar, and has the best vocal range since Freddie Mercury

aforementioned virtuosity

That clip is a small stone's throw from popular alt rock.

The pianist is very impressive in a classical way; after four videos, I don't have any sense of how inventive he is, compared to say, an out of context genius (imo) like Bob Wiseman, ex Blue Rodeo, or a prog player like Wakeman or Emerson.

The guitarist is not a good singer. He can carry a tune as well as Yorke, shouts his way into the top of his chest voice and has a falsetto. Not uncommon. None of the power of Mercury. I saw no guitar virtuosity. I short flash, is all.

You haven't sold me. I would avoid the "I know more about music" line here, btw. Your call.

I loves me some Mogwai, and your disdain for the Icelandic language may indeed be justified...but Sigur Ros doesn't sing in any particular language.

Sigur Ros were one of those bands that I was little uncertain about when I got tickets for the live show - they're so relaxing, could the show keep my attention the entire time? Absolutely - I was shocked how forceful the show was.

Now, I'm stuck with the same preconceived view about Mogwai. I know I should see them live - probably will at some point.
