Dead and dying pirates, misleading cargo manifests, international inquiries--this is a Jack Ryan project waiting to happen.

The Russians are going to track down and kill everyone that had anything to do with this pirating as well as their families. They're not as nice as the US or UK, or even Iran.

Screw the war on terror - there's no winning that. We need to focus all of the U.S. efforts to the War on Pirates!

/I 'admire' the decision to use bio-weapons to kill the pirates while maintaining the precious cargo. Smart move.

Playinodds 2008-09-28 04:29:28 PM
read again - this boat was coming from iran going to somalia. sounds to me like they're not just making bad things - they're distributing them.

You forgot that the players fit right into the Clancy script, too: Russia, Iran, Somalia. Act 2 will likely involve Israel.

Scary but Hilarious at the same time. Thats what those duche bags get for stealing a ship that has radioactive materials on it.

Don't forget China.

The ship set sail from Nanjing, China, at the end of July.

I hope we get a follow up for this story.

Ringshadow 2008-09-28 04:38:37 PM
The issues I have with this is that new fuel rods, and raw fuel that has not yet been put in rods, don't really have the ability to make you sick. So the only way there could have been fuel on board that could have killed people is if it was used fuel that was incorrectly stored.

Of course, I'm going off American standards, I have no idea what they're doing over there. I'd be more likely to blame, say, a chemical weapon of some sort. But that's me.

/new fuel can be handled with cotton gloves

kabloink 2008-09-28 04:42:06 PM
Obviously, the ship had stocked up on milk while waiting for their cargo to be loaded in China. Which was unfortunate for the thirsty pirates.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 04:42:25 PM
Somali pirates suffered skin burns, lost hair and fell gravely ill "within days" of boarding the MV Iran Deyanat. Some of them died.

that could have been from a chemical agent you know. blister agents can cause rashes and burns, cause hair loss, vomiting and bleeding. without running tests we won't be sure what's causing it though.

Isn't that ship supposed to be dropping its cargo in Denmark? Why the hell would chemical weapons be going to Denmark? It can't be for terror attacks - americans can't even find Denmark on a map of Europe.

cabbyman 2008-09-28 04:46:28 PM
How will this sudden loss of so many pirates affect all the global warmings?

You are correct, that fresh fuel elements or weapons pits aren't going to make a crew sick.

Other isotopes, in not terribly large quantites, sure could. Cobalt-60, Cesium-137, and the like. Could be dirty bomb makings, could just be total stupid accident (like the Goiania accident).

wolvernova 2008-09-28 04:46:52 PM
The ship was coming from China, so it was probably just toys, food, or whatever.

believe it or not, improperly stored industrical chemicals can have similar (or worse) effects that chemical weapons. Especially if they somehow get mixed up in a ship's hold and are left to simmer together for a while.

Wonder why they aren't accepting the US's $7M offer:

Iranian News (pops)

Maybe not the most reliable source and a heavy use of the term "bribe", but since the pirates aren't getting the $20M they're looking for (pops)...Well, I'd take the money when people are dying.

I don't buy this story. It needs investigation of course but knee jerk reactions may be just what someone wants.
It's to easy to plant stories and then point to them as proof. See the aluminum tubes story as an example.

FTFA: The ship set sail from Nanjing, China, at the end of July. According to its manifest, it was heading for Rotterdam where it would unload 42500 tons of iron ore and "industrial products" purchased by a German client.

yeah even sodium in high concentrations can be very corrosive. melt skin and burn it,breathed in it can kill.

True, but this one does.

The US has offered USD 7m to the pirates, who hijacked an Iranian ship in the Gulf of Aden, to receive entry permission and search the vessel.

That's an Iranian news source. Grain of irradiated salt and all that.

Again, it's an Iranian source so take it with a Grain of salt.

Even Thomas Jefferson paid ransoms to pirates until he was able to send ships to defeat them. Since we don't know what might be causing this, it could be a great bluff just to get aboard the ship and firebomb them all to hell.

"a Somali pirate spokesman told The Associated Press his group was demanding a $20 million ransom to release a cargo ship loaded with Russian tanks"

In other news, pirates have spokesmen.
