Nice try, trolls. The kid's mom gave Obama the bracelet, and then the dad - divorced from her - said that wasn't what she meant to do.

FTA:

"But a month later, Ryan's father Brian -- who is no longer married to Tracy -- told Wisconsin Public Radio that his ex-wife had misgivings about Obama wearing the bracelet and mentioning their son on the campaign trail. It seems as though just as Tracy Jopek supports Obama and wants to end the war, Brian Jopek has a different take on what should happen in Iraq and may be more inclined to support McCain."

But, of course, facts don't matter to the McCain campaign. I have never seen such blatant bald-face lies so easily and shamelessly said in a Presidential campaign. More pathetic desperation from McCain and the lobbyists that control him.

I'm not sure what the reality is behind this story -- I have a call into the Obama campaign and Tracy Jopek to find out more about this story, and will let you know what they say.

But you published it anyway. GG. Maybe finish the story first, hurr.

Wow, the economy is tanking, bombs are going off in Baghdad, McCain lost a debate, Sarah Palin now has negative favorability ratings, and ---

Oh, hey, look everyone! Shiny bracelets!

McCain should really suspend his campaign and fly into Green Bay to straighten this out.

Ok, so the mother goes out of her way to give Obama the bracelet so he can wear it. Obama accepts it. This is done in public and is written up in the local news, so everyone knows what happened.

Then later on, the father, who is divorced from the mother, goes on the radio and says that the impression that he got, from email exchanges with his ex-wife, is that she didn't mean what she said when she gave Obama the bracelet.

ZOOOMG! Obama is exploiting a dead soldier for political gain!

You know, for 5 1/2 years, McCain fooled his captors by naming the Packers' offensive line as the members of his squadron...

Unless he's in Pittsburgh, in which case it was the Steelers' offensive line.

Is this is important as bracelets and lipstick? I have trouble keeping up with the issues.

FeedTheCollapse 2008-09-28 05:18:31 PM
I hadn't heard about this until the debate. I saw this more as Obama noting that McCain tried to completely sidestep Obama's "Bomb Bomb Iran" reference with something completely unrelated (McCain's pretty bracelet) and Obama's point was more of a "what the hell are you on about?" kind of thing.

This About That [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 05:22:09 PM
Billy McGoodGuy: the wishes of the mother of a dead child

It's the soldier's mother who gave him the bracelet, and it's the self-important, estranged ex-husband who is making the trouble. That statement perfectly illustrates the thing I hate most about the co-called "conservatives", and the reason the so-called "conservatives" have got to be defeated this election, and thereafter. They are willing to say anything -- appropriate or not, true or not -- to promote the "cause" whether or not they understand what the "cause" might be. It's revolting, actually.

The Great EZE [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 05:27:27 PM
This whole mess could've been prevented if Obama merely stood up to McCain's habit of whoring out solders' deaths in order to gain political sympathy AND pointed out that ending a war does not somehow "invalidate" said solder's death. But I guess responding to a bracelet pander with a bracelet pander is the safe play.

I'd love to meet the focus group that thinks exploiting death can gain sympathy.

Billy McGoodGuy: I read it. It sounds to me like she would like to keep his name from being used as a political tool. Right?

No, wrong. Her ex-husband claims that she sent him an e-mail telling him that she had asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet. Nowhere in the article is there any evidence (other than hearsay provided by an ex-husband who seems to dislike Obama) that she actually asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet. Nor is there any evidence that the father himself asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet.

Lawnchair 2008-09-28 05:29:13 PM
For what it's worth, Barack Obama did not bring up the fact that he had a braclet, and gave no indication that he was going to bring up his bracelet, until John McCain did his grandstanding "I'm more patriotic, because I have a bracelet". Obama then said "you ain't the only one". I'm not sure what level of planned it was, but it was cool.

Burn98 2008-09-28 05:29:15 PM
Billy McGoodGuy: I read it. It sounds to me like she would like to keep his name from being used as a political tool. Right?

Wrong! Lets look at what she actually said.

"I couldn't believe it. It was such an honor, such an honor," she said. "To know that he does know his name. It means a lot."
