I think it's about time we declare a war on wars on abstract concepts.

Is it just me or have there been more than normal the amount of embarrassing mistakes by submitters lately? I mean it's almost as if some people don't even read the stories first.

Could it be?????

Naaaah

As for the actual story, I think this is just more evidence that stupid is as stupid does, and no amount of money or legislation can force someone to make good choices. That's worth remembering the next time some politician comes with some bright idea on how to spend more of the tax payers money. Too late for this bailout plan of course.

Just as in 2003 when this sizeable program began, about 20% of Arkansas young people were classified as 'overweight', 17% as 'at risk', 60% as 'healthy weight', and 1.8% as 'underweight' (≤5th percentile on growth curves).

20+60+17+1.8=98.8

1.2% are......dead?

Article was grasping for straws trying making it look like the effort was not merely ineffective but a regression. The spinning here is just as the government's spinning. Probably the work of some overzealous libertarians with a chip on their shoulder.

the childhood obesity in this case was caused by proximity to the scalar wave generators (weather control) located in the underground alien bases in arkansas.

Junkfood Science is the most worthless recource on the internet. It is the one place that "fat acceptance" points to when they whine about how it isn't their fault that they are obese, and would be fat no matter what their lifestlye was like.

I really don't understand the childhood obesity thing until I remember that parents can barely control their own habits much less their child's. I wonder how far the effects of having severely obese children will reach.

Wait, so you're saying that the government can't pass laws and spend money to successfully fix society's ills? Really? Is there a political philosophy, perhaps one popular in Southern States like Alabama, which would have predicted this?

No, there isn't. In Alabama, the *only* political philosophy is that it's perfectly fine to force people to live the way you think they should and believe what you believe.

There are some different parties that disagree as to where and how to interfere first, and who gets to interfere, but that's about it.

To be fair, the government is doing it's best. Bread lines and soup kitchens should go a long way towards curing childhood obesity.

Come on, you're trying to use reason with an anti-government type.

You have this notion about stuff like logic, and principles, and consistent standards applied across situations and groups. They don't get that stuff--they think you're just trying to make things complicated. Just bait them; it's more fun.

ciocia [TotalFark] 2008-09-28 05:55:32 PM
I'd like to have a little time to read the report itself. Sandy Szwarc is in the tank for junk food makers, and a goddess in the fat acceptance movement, so she has 2 reasons to shill the idea that "you can't do anything about being fat."

Also, it might take more than 5 years to turn stuff around. Or a different approach.

Alright, like other people I'm intrigued -- what are we looking at? Toast with jam dunked into a soft boiled egg? Toast with caviar? Or maybe a pork crackling?

Let's do a little research on the author of this blog.

A general overview of the author can be found here: Sandy Szwarc (new window)

Information on the group she writes for can be found here: Competitive Enterprise Institute (new window)

In short, it's another blog by a free market solves all, business will do the right thing shill author.

I find this disturbing in so many ways.

Everyone is aware of the problem of childhood obesity. A state puts together a comprehensive plan to combat it.

Five years later - no results.

If a plan like this doesn't work, what will?

You gotta admit, that was one unnecessarily lengthy article. They should have contained a link to the Cliff Notes.

As for the actual story, I think this is just more evidence that stupid is as stupid does, and no amount of money or legislation can force someone to make good choices.

Exactly . . . you can't fix stupid. This would make a good summary of the article.

The problem can't all be blamed on junk food. I think a bigger part of the issue is the lack of exercise kids get these days. When I was a kid in the '70s and early '80s we spent almost all of our free time outside, running around the neighborhood, because that's pretty much all there was to do. We didn't realize it at the time, but we were getting several hours of moderate exercise a week.

These days television, computers, and video games compel kids to stay inside and sit sedentary.
