Kind of hard to tell, but I'd dare say that automobile pictured is a Model S, not a Model T.

I work at The Henry Ford so I'm getting a kick out of these replies....

Gonna have to dodge like 50 of them on my way to employee parking. Thank god most of the hoopla is happening downtown.

I heard John McCain will be on hand with the one he got new as a retirement present.

StreetlightInTheGhetto 2008-09-28 11:17:52 AM
If you live in the Metro Detroit area, I suggest you check out the Model T plant on Woodward, in Highland Park.

Then hit up a bar and down a few, 'cause you'll need 'em.

The one thing you think they'd take care of... c'est la vie.

I rode in one at the Henry Ford. Talk about how far we've come.
BTW that museum and the Greenfield village are da bomb for anyone interested in transport and other history. It has Edison's actual workshop and Henry Fords childhood house.

Henry Ford bought his wife an electric car in 1908, since they'd been around since 1834. She liked it. (pops)

//if only there were a way to build electric cars today

Maske 2008-09-28 11:31:10 AM
It was just a couple of years ago that I read that today's Ford fleet has an average gas mileage that is WORSE than the Model T. (Which was also designed originally to be powered by ethanol.)

It is clear that the Ford family builds cars just as well as they build football teams. What a complete embarrassment. But if you've ever owned a Ford, you already knew this.

Model T ~25 MPG
Average 2008 car ~24 MPG

We've come so far! *tear*

Seriously though.. All of our advances since the Model T outside the automotive industry, and no improvement on burning gas.

thedarkshadow 2008-09-28 11:32:49 AM
How hard is it to drive a model T? What's involved (I don't suppose there's a battery). It's probably not like a standard (manual) car, so what's the differences...and can the model T engine run on today's fuels (and oils)? Is it a 4 stroke engine?
Stupid questions, but if you google there's very little info.

It's called progress. We also don't have to carefully stoke a wood-fuled stove to cook anymore, but I would hardly refer to this generation of housewives and chefs as "That inept electric range crowd".

Yeah, but the model t was much smaller and lighter and had much less horse power than a modern vehicle.

I'm sure if you had such a tiny motor that it would max out at 30 mph in a modern compact it would get over 100 mpg. Not sure anyone would want one and not sure the govt would allow one, but yeah.

That's why Jews bought Chryslers. If you look at the early Chryslers they have stars of David as their hood ornament.

2008 Ford Focus-23 mpgfark you, Ford.

If you judge progress only in terms of MPG, we have made no progress whatsoever (except for my 1998 Volkswagen Jetta TDI that gets 45-50mpg ..Haha!).

But after reading the link above about the journalist' experience in attempting to drive a model T the relative progress in tearms of comfort SAFETY and convenience, is amazing!

They had the 10 gallon gas tank under the drivers seat!!! No adjustable anything, the crank start could break your thumb! It nearly took a degree in engineering to own/operate one of those things....today my retired mother can drive 80 mph cross country in comfort and safety ..air bags, power brakes, radio, power steering, can withstand a rollover and all sorts of impact, has air conditioning, seats 4, etc etc etc...and her Buick Regal still gets 24 mpg.

Try that Model T!!

BoSchembechler 2008-09-28 12:37:06 PM

The Honda Fit has the gas tank under the driver's seat. It isn't a deathtrap either.

Mad Scientist 2008-09-28 12:42:24 PM
No improvement in mileage? Maybe. But my 350Z gets 25 mpg on the highway. Same fuel consumption, while developing 289 hp. I also have A/C and heated leather seats, a top speed well over 100 mph, Bose stereo and a GPS nav system. Much better safety features. And much better emmissions controls. Even sitting still and not running, my Z pollutes less by not venting gasoline fumes into the air. I'm also up to 50 k miles, with no tuneup or maintainence other than new tires and oil changes. A T couldn't do that. So I think some progress has been made over the years.
