Rugby parties were the reason I started playing rugby. Its awesome when you play a tough game, go to the rugby house and throw a party for the away team. Rugby is still a sport about a sport and not who is the coolest guy with the fattest endorsements.

Back in my college days, I used to 'study' in this little dive bar near Brackenridge park, where on Thursdays the rugby guys would come in and party after their matches. They had the hottest chicks hanging around.

© where was I going with this?

I'd have to be drunk to wear a pair of nuthuggers too.

So what are the stats on how many northerners would watch sober when they have to deal with the Storm beating them at their own game?

/never watched a game
//heard we won something last year or the year before?

I played in college and in law school. I would agree with the comments about the parties.

Then I graduated and worked for a few years, and put rugby aside. I decided go get back into the game after missing it.

My observation: totally different worlds.

Basically, it was a lot of the stuff I didn't like about the sport (dumb violence) and none of the good stuff (camaraderie and partying with the other team - and the chicks - after the game thing was over). Maybe it's just a function of age.

Interesting bit of history. The US won two of the only four gold medals in Olympic Rugby. They won in 1920 and 1924. They did not compete in 1900 and 1908. The other two years it was an Olympic sport. Damn French had to go ruin it.

subby needs for fix headline:

47% of Rugby players would refuse to play if booze were banned from the events.

Oh, and add a HERO tag.

Plus, there's a known need for players to have vitamin B.
/Playing Rugby and going to the pub for pints is like smoking and booze. The smoke pouch in the lungs is directly connected to the booze buds in the tongue. If you sever the two, your head falls off. Medical fact, check it out.

If you do that with Rugby, it'll be like giving the league a lobotomy. Not that I give a shiat, it's the NRL not the Union.

I played Rugby for 4 years in High School. It seems to me to be the only sport where all your anger was targeted on the field. In Football, we would hate our opposing teams guts. With Rugby it was fun to play viciously on the field and then have a good party with the other team afterwards.

One of the best times ever was when we had a Canadian team come down and play us. We put them up in our houses and showed them a good time. We all went to Six Flags and afterward had a gigantic party. They were so hung over the next day we whipped their assess at the game.

Its the only reason I play, 80 minutes of running around in the mud and rain getting my head crushed in the scrum, but afterwards, 20 pints and a bowl of chips later, all is forgiven.

I only had couple of experiences hanging out with rugby players at a certain college in Maryland back in 1999. I have never met a larger group of date rapers and drunken yahoos in my life.

/love the sport
/not so much the players

I just started union at age 25 in southeastern PA a couple months ago...the drink-ups afterwards are fantastic! I'm still a B-side warrior, but its definitely a fun sport that puts your fitness to test in a big way. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to try a new and different sport.

hey David - I have played, and still live in s.e. pa also; what club do you play for?

First submitter had it right, Rugby is about the comeraderie, not the money or the notoriety.

I don't think you can play rugby and then survive the evening/next day without a lot of booze.

It took me forever to work up from being a B sider to an A sider. Basically I went after my own teammates just like I did the other team (when I had to fill in slots for the away team). Play hard and play fair. I havent played in a few years and really miss the sport. Now that I'm back down in Austin I may try to find an old guy league. I've seen a lot of college kids these days purposely trying to injur other players. I'll definitely scout out a team a while before I try to walk on.

Rat: Thursdays the rugby guys would come in and party after their matches. They had the hottest chicks hanging around.

That was always an amazing thing to me. Even guys that were butt ugly and had the social skills of a block of lead managed to hook up with some pretty decent women. Once I had this ginormous amazon of a woman (who was very hot) fender lizarding me. After the game she sat down and was talking to me at the bar. We were getting a long nicely until my girlfriend showed up. Fortunately for me, my girlfriend knew how it was and didnt care if girls flirted with me. I wasnt going anywhere with it anyway and she knew it.

Amazing sport. I went to a University of Idaho Rugby game years ago. I was amazed that I was at a College game. Players on both sides drinking beer. In one case a guy was drinking home brew from his VW bus. Players were hangin around getting cups of beer.
