Would it really be that bad if he was right?

Maybe we could, you know, enter into a true alliance with the rest of the Western world...maybe stop spending so damn much on our military and building up our schools and infrastructure, paying our police and firemen, finding the best teachers...let the rest of the world shoulder a bit of the burden of playing protector of democracy.

there's no such thing as a super power anymore.

back in the 30's, 40's & 50's yes, America was... she was building herself. People were creating factories, invent items looking for the next big new item and building it here in America. That's what made America a super power.

Then that biatch greed took over... and big companies saw their product could be laid out, manufactured and shipped back over cheaper than paying US wages.

greed is a whore

Bush?

We were NEVER a Superpower that could stand alone against the entire world.

We were a Superpower because we led the most powerful coalition of allies.

Thanks for pissing that away, George. Seriously.

Douchebag.

It's hardly fair to blame George Bush. It's like blaming the town drunk for lying passed out in a gutter, or blaming your 3 year old child for eating cookies that you left out where he could get at them.

Do you blame the tard, or the people who elected the tard? He was well known to be useless before he was even elected president the first time.

First thought before reading article: "can't be Merkel".
This lack of surprises in life is starting to bore me.

Yeah, the term superpower has been played to death over the last fifty years and especially over the last 17. Its meaning has been completely blurred in a haze of academic and political cross-pollination (or, BS feeding). In some respects, such as militarily and scientifically, the US maintains a vast lead over its nearest competitors. This current financial crumbling that we're going through probably won't have such a big impact on those areas for quite a while, and only if nothing is done to stop the process.

But this guy has a point, people are losing trust in America, both in terms of moral values and financial stability. Trust is easy to throw away and hard to re-earn, so we better get right to it.

In absolute terms, America is likely to continue to get stronger and richer.

In relative terms, America has been declining steadily since 1945.

Argh2: We were NEVER a Superpower that could stand alone against the entire world.

Except from the end of the second world war through about the mid-80s, when that was pretty much exactly what we were. Only reason we're not now is that more of our assets are dependent of outsourced stuff. We still have most of the world's military nuclear power and financial weight.

Seth'n'Spectrum: such as militarily and scientifically, the US maintains a vast lead over its nearest competitors.

Militarily, yes. Scientifically? not remotely. Whatever lead the US holds in science is rapidly diminishing.

THIS.

Not that the preoccupation with Fukuyama and the human rights regime that dominated the 90s wasn't fascinating, but everybody needs some good ol' power politics once in a while.

Forgot about the Allies in WWII and NATO? They weren't just for show.

There are 300 million people in the US, out of a total of 6 Billion. BILLION. We can dominate world affairs, but we can't dictate. BushCo tried that and lost, all the while Russia and China are re-emerging as major rivals. Either one has more power to hurt us than Al Quaida can even dream of.

Historians are NOT going to be kind to the Douchebag.

Aquadyne 2008-09-28 06:12:08 AM
The author of the article claims that FDR took the US dollar off the gold standard.

If my memory serves me correctly, it was Nixon in 1971 when he effectively pulled US out of the Bretton Woods agreement

Stoker 2008-09-28 06:23:36 AM
The sooner we realize this, we can get to work on it and fix it. To be a superpower, you gotta have money in the bank rather than loans from a bank.

/Get to work on this? Replace Congress with real Americans who will do it for the love, not the money.

Gavino 2008-09-28 06:40:20 AM

More like take the next couple of decades off from the "world cop" job. It's time Europe and Japan and Korea paid for their own security.

Eidolon: Christ, but do we need Obama.

Hate to break it to you, but while he's the better choice than McCain, he's coming on the scene decades too late to stop the U.S. from dropping off the cliff to 2nd-rate nation status.
