You can get ketchup-flavored potato chips here, too.

You've never seen a chip so caked in powder before. Truly an experience.

There's so much to love about Toronto-from the Tim Hortons quick-serve cafes on every corner (you never know when you'll need another Timbit doughnut hole) to the tidy walking paths linking the neighborhoods, from the parks to the ketchup-flavored potato chips. You get the point.
= ALL of Canada is like this. In Vancouver replace Tim's with Tim's, Starbucks, AND Blenz.

Winners, MEC and provincial liquor boards are also not Toronto-exclusive...

So, 7 reasons to go to Toronto, including "stalk Margaret Atwood". Good enough for me. At least they didn't say "The CN Tower".

I remember being in a bar in Toronto, talking to a guy from Detroit, who was flabbergasted that nobody had tried to mug him for TWO WHOLE BLOCKS when he walked over from his hotel.

Quadraton [TotalFark] 2008-09-27 10:06:23 PM
This list is lame. Let's go to Toronto to see an LCBO, because I have never seen such a place anywhere else in all of Ontario.

There are so many better reasons to go to Toronto. You can go to Canada's Wonderland, or the Playdium, or the visit the Hockey Hall of Fame, or climb the CN Tower.

But instead the author decides we should all go to Toronto to visit an MEC, a place design solely for those people looking to get away from Toronto.

And tourists shouldn't miss the Leafs' Stanley Cup parade each July. Its route never varies: it starts on the 18th green and goes around the clubhouse.

It's been 10 years, but the best thing about Toronto then was the music.

"Caribana makes Mardi Gras look like a pretender"?!?

I've been to both events multiple times, and Caribana is awesome but isn't quite ready to make Mardi Gras into a pretender - whatever that means.

Fixed that for you.

I went to Toronto for a day and there was nothing to do. It was boring and after Vancouver it had nothing to offer.

And-1 2008-09-27 11:48:15 PM
It's not news, it's paid advertising!

Seriously, I have been to Toronto several times, and - well, I am really not getting a kick out this. This little advertorial is so see-through and so stupid.

Don't get me wrong - there are lots of reasons to go to Toronto. Go for the lake, the tower, the diversity, the food, the friendly people, the thriving business, the boutique hotels, the bustling malls - but this list is so full of payola it is ridiculous.

Shame, Fark. Shame.

I hate the Skydome and the CN tower too
I hate Nathan Phillips Square and the Ontario Zoo
The rents too high, the air's unclean
The beaches are dirty, and the people are mean
And the women are big, and the men are dumb
And the children are loopy cause they live in a slum
The water is polluted and the mayors a dork
They dress real bad and they think they're New York
In Toronto, Ontario...

I was there once, and it didn't seem so bad a place. You could get through half the city without going above ground, which, if you have ever been to LA or Houston, is a huge plus.

Plus they have a tower so high that if you go to the top and jump off, you are sure not to end up still alive with lotsa broken bones.

The Rest of Canada hates Toronto. Go ahead, ask anybody. Ask that guy up there ^ from Ottawa. Montreal hates Toronto, Calgary and Edmonton REALLY hate Toronto. Vancouver... well they just ignore Toronto cause THEY'RE really better than Toronto. ;-)

Toronto sucks.. just like the leafs.

It USED to be a nice clean city. Detroit muggings? go to Jane and Finch. Toronto the good has turned into a cesspool. Glad to be away from there.. never goin back.

The Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario (reopening in November after huge renovations), and the Ontario Science Center are all kickass awesome places to go. The Toronto Film Festival is farking awesome, the bookstores and comic shops between Mervish village, Bloor West and Yonge St are better than any other city in Canada, Queen St west has Bakka Books and the Silver Snail, and there is always something to do, always. there is a restaurant that specializes in every single culture on earth, and no limit to the crazy shiat you can find in stores. People who are bored of Toronto either have their balls cut off by a or dried up their coonts and sit at home waiting for their next big exciting bowel movement to blog about.

If Toronto is your idea of beautiful, I encourage you to spend a few days in Chicago or San Francisco. Toronto is a generic grey dump with a few nice buildings interspersed.

Toronto is not an exciting city by any stretch. It tries too hard to be something that it isn't. There is very little outstanding in Toronto that cannot be found elsewhere. Toronto is a city that suffers from very low self esteem and tries very very hard to compensate for that. It isn't the nicest city in North America, Canada, Ontario, or even Southern Ontario. It just...is.

Besides, the Annex is not that "hip". It's full of dumpy old pre-war homes occupied by students with couches on the patio, and million dollar century homes owned by such youthful types as Margaret Atwood and John Ralston Saul/Adrienne Clarkson.

Toronto is fine for what it is, but it absolutely is nothing special.

Cuban cigars. Functional public transit (I know they gripe, but I'd take the TTC over anything in the US outside of NYC). As widely multi-ethnic as anywhere on the planet. Clean and safe downtown, in no small part because the really crappy parts (Jane and Finch) are pushed to the edges. So much smarter than the US cities where the poor concentrated in the prime downtown spots.

I'm not a city person. At all. But, of North American cities I've spent much time in (which is quite a few), I'd take Toronto.

That's the point you twat. Toronto has everything from everywhere.

You also obviously have never actually gotten out of your car in Toronto. Probably another terrified American who is scared of being mugged when he isn't carrying a gun. if you actually walked around and went inside of buildings, you'd discover what the city is about. As for your architectural ignorance, you can lick the balls of U of T's downtown campus. Chicago is a ghetto and Frisco is a gentrified Starbucks wet dream for microserfs to get old and die in.

Eh, there are still tons of areas in Toronto where you couldn't pay me to live, and they aren't in the edges. Parkdale (yes I know it's gentrifying), St. James Town, Lansdowne, Regent Park, etc.

The public transit is functional, but little more. The subway/rail system in a city this size is laughable. I agree with you though that downtown is clean and that it is enviably multi-ethnic.

As stereotypical as this sounds, mr-b's hatred for TO obviously comes from hatred of the Leafs. I've lived all over Canada.. from Uni in Mtl and BC to a couple summers out east. I now live in TO and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this City. And I live downtown. Alotta the problem is EVERY canadian not from TO loves to hate on the Leafs and the Leafs fans don't give a shiat about any other team. While habs, sens, etc fans are ragging on the leafs, leaf's fans don't waste their breath on berating other teams. In a vacuum, it seems like jealousy more than anything else.
Anyways, my 2 cents. Great city. Visit it and enjoy it for what it is!
And LOL at everyone hating Toronto.. you gotta be kidding me mr-b. Grow up

Wow, this "news" is only 6 months old! Whooooo!

/Aside from that, reading something about Toronto by someone who doesn't. live. in. Toronto - is hilarious.
The Annex is apparently great for stalking at least two female (yeesh, what's with that?)celebrities - I mean, what's the point of the(se) article(s) but to entice stupid people to go places for the wrong reasons? And the Distillery as film studio?
It's like the Zen teaching:

Typical response. People from Toronto do not think they are better than anyone else in Canada. Ask any Torontonian and they will rave about how awesome Montreal and Vancouver are and I personally have alway's thought Ottawa was a great city. You angry types from other parts of Canada always claim Toronto has an inferiority complex due to cities like New York and Chicago yet you come off as the having they very complex you describe by feeling the need to express your contempt as soon as the name Toronto comes up. Toronto has a few bad areas. But don't go screaming Jane and Finch every time someone claims it is a safe city. It is a safe city. Per capita it has the second lowest crime (p) rate in Canada behind Quebec city. Most violent crime in Toronto is contained in areas that if you do not live in you would not have any reason to go to.

Ablejack 2008-09-28 02:20:40 AM
The best reason to go to Toronto is that you get out of Buffalo for the weekend.

My own personal contempt for Toronto aside, I somewhat agree with this. The vast majority of the murders and gun-related injuries in the city happen between gangs. When an innocent person is shot, the outcry is quite extensive (provided they're not black. Toronto-related news media is still fairly racist). Think Jane Creba, or the guy shot in the head outside the Brass Rail, or the Vietnamese fellow gunned down outside his shop earlier this year.

Sexual assaults are fairly random and while you hear a lot about them on CP24, it's also a multi-million population city. Provided you're smart about your actions and walking around alone at night, your odds of getting raped, etc. drop dramatically. There are some crazy folks that assault people midday (those tend to happen around Jane/Eglinton, it seems), but you can't really avoid those. They'd be crazy no matter what city they're in.

EliteAnalyst: Did someone just mention my hometown Toronto, the city where I was born and raised and am poised for a"n" historic electoral breakthrough?

Toronto, located in Ontario, the province in which over 40% of voters consistently support my Conservative party in polls?

Toronto, which has been the beneficiary of my government's record breaking levels of investment in infrastructure and social programs, including culture?

Toronto, home of one of my two Muslim MPs, most of any party?

Toronto, Canada's financial capital and the city that stands to lose most under the guaranteed deep recession the Liberals' Carbon Tax plan would unleash, in a time of economic uncertainty?

Is this the Toronto you speak of? I like Toronto, its cool.

I saw Harper at an event this evening in Etobicoke. Didn't get to meet him, but he seemed like a very personable fellow, a stark difference from the Harper the Liberals painted back in 2006. His security detail were total cocks. I suppose they have to be, though.
