Good night, sweet bassist. May your beer in heaven always be fresh and cold.

John Paul Jones [TotalFark] 2008-09-27 07:50:31 PM
He's far from the "best bassist to ever live". Maybe "right place, right time", followed by "wrong place, wrong time".

That's funny coming from you... John Paul Jones.

I would say he was the best 'Metal bassist' to ever live.

Billy Sheehan.

He was good, but Les Claypool would play circles around him.

Okay you got me there 'Mr. Big'.

Lol, shiatty joke.

Anyway, yeah you're right. I forgot about Billy. I saw him in concert once with Stu Hamm and he was farking amazing.

I would say Cliff Burton had quite an influence though. That's probably a better statement.

And let's try not to get into the whole 'LESCLAYPOOLISBETTERTHANFLEA' or 'FLEAISBETTERTHANJACOFAGORIUS'. Believe me I've heard all the arguments before, none end well.

Love Cliff, but far from great. Certainly not best. I'll give him a solid 'good'.

How many bass players does it take to change a lightbulb?

None. The keyboard player does it with his left hand.

The Jimi Hendrix of bass.

/metal bassist

Cliff just never had the opportunity to suck. Hell, if he'd lived, he'd be in the Metallica Armani shopping spree meme picture wearing his skinny jeans and My Chemical Romance t-shirt.

His stuff with Hawkwind revolutionized bass playing in the 1970s. Without Lemmy, you'd have no Cliff.

I came here for Steve Harris. He better be here.

Here's Sunn O)))'s (very, very loosely interpreted) cover of For Whom The Bell Tolls. It's subtitled: F.W.T.B.T (I Dream of Lars Ulrich Being Thrown Through the Bus Window Instead of My Mystikal Master Kliff Burton)

Run to the Hills, motherfarker!

No matter how many times I see that clip, Cliff still gets my bass playing juice flowing. He made that bass sound like a 3rd badly tuned guitar.

Keep in mind, Cliff was only in the band for 4 years, and still influenced more people that Newkid.

For the record, there seems to be a lot of love for "bass as melody instrument" style playing like Jaco, Wooten, etc.

The Dynamite Monkey highly prefers "bass as rhythm instrument" players -- their contributions are much less obvious but usually much more critical to the song.

Did not leave disappointed.

Any of you fellow bass-assholes got a chance to check out the new Electro-Harmonix bass effects?

They look quite sweet.
They have a new "Bass Muff" (Big Muff for bass)
I know Cliff used an old Russian Big Muff for his distorted sound.

I already have an Electro Harmonix "Bass-Balls" envelope filter (wah effect) and I hope that if I combine it with the new Bass Muff I can get a sound like from the clip here.

They look really cool and are quite cheap.

I wonder how many people know that Les was approached by Kirk (a high school classmate at the time) to be in Metallica before Cliff. He declined, of course.

/Imagine Anesthesia with Les on the low end of things!
//Not to show any disrespect, Cliff was the man, and is Dime's right hand man in the righteous Superband above.
///With Bonham on drums.

As far as metal bassists go, he was awesome.

Another favorite of mine: Steve DiGiorgio

I won't name NAMES but here is my list of bass players who suck:

-Bassists who turn the treble all the way up and the bass way down

-play bass like a lead melodic instrument

-try too hard to impress OTHER bassists

-fail to support other instruments

-fail to get "in the pocket" rhythm wise

-play too fast all the time and always rush

this pretty much covers all the lame-ass super bass hero guys (losers) many of whom have been mentioned above.

Solid f*cking bass players like John Deacon,Cliff Williams,Michael Anthony and Dusty Hill get ZERO credit while the bozos who make their basses sound more like banjos get all the praise.

sonnyboy11 2008-09-27 11:39:41 PM
Jaco was probably the greatest overall bass player I ever saw although Tony Levin ranks up there too. I am not down on Geddy either, it's just that with Geddy you gotta like the entire package (bass, voice, songs).

The great rock bass player ever though is The Ox- John Entwhistle. No doubt Cliff is talented, I love his look, and you gotta think Metallica would've been a far better band now if he had survived. But he was not the greatest bass player to ever live. No way, no how.

As a bassist I take issue with this only because as long as you hold up your duties as the low end of a musical group, what else you do to brighten up your appearance in the sound a little more is free game as far as I'm concerned.

Sometimes following the guitarist gets old. There's nothing wrong with standing out a little.

/Now when you start playing like "Fieldy", that's taking it a little too far.

CD read my post above, I agree with you 100%.

If you want to be a good bass player, get an upright. I am not saying you need to play the upright in your rock band -- but learn how to play it, the sounds it makes, how it is really a rhythm instrument -- and it will make you a better electric bassist almost immediately.

Is that same luxury afforded to your drummer?

After Cliff died, Les Claypool (who had gone to school with Kirk Hammett) auditioned for Metallica. Legend has it, he was told he was too good and to go start his own band.

Listen to some of Mudvayne's Ryan Martinie's work. Especially the L.D. 50 album. Great stuff.

Why do you think I'm in a metal band? More opportunities to emulate the drum pattern with room to be creative, I.E. DOUBLE BASS PEDALS :D

"...awsome clip of Metallica..."

Spinal Tap?
It isn't Spinal Tap?

If you were to thread a 2" hawser through a live cow's mouth, through its intestinal tract, and out its anus, cemented its feet in place so it couldn't get away, and then got two teams of Tourette's Syndrome sufferers to play tug-of-war while somebody beat the cow with an accordion I'm pretty sure it would sound like this "bass solo".
