What I don't understand is why someone hasn't sued because "the knowledge that alcohol exists" offends their religion.

unyon [TotalFark] 2008-09-27 06:49:01 PM
Questions:

1) Did he specifically make not handling alcohol a condition of his employment?
2) Was he asked to move alcohol specifically because he was a muslim and it would make him uncomfortable?
3) Is moving alcohol not typically a part of the job that he was hired to?
4) Did he request a transfer to a position that would not require moving alcohol, was such a position otherwise available, and was he denied such a transfer without grounds?

If the answer to any of these is 'yes', then he has a point. If the answer to all of them is 'no', then he needs to STFU and GBTW or find a new job.

Case Closed.

Since when is *handling* alcohol against Muslim beliefs? AFAIK, they are forbidden to drink, but I see no reason he can't move cases from point A to point B.

There are.

Hell, Tesco, I'll do it if he won't. I'll PERSONALLY handle that alcohol all day, even on my break if I have to.

jimpoz 2008-09-27 06:53:34 PM
If they asked him to move alcohol, aren't they exactly NOT discriminating on the basis of religion?

"Make him move that booze."
"But he's Muslim."
"Oh. Get someone else to do it then."
That would be treating him differently on the basis of religion, which is discrimination.

the answer to 2. was yes, according to the article.

FTA: "Tesco claimed Mr Ahmed was made aware at his induction that he would be handling alcohol, and that every effort was made to find him an alternative role in the warehouse. But the claimant, of Upper Dale Road, Normanton, claims he was victimised by managers because of his stance."

fark the whiny prick.

So at what point during the fermentation of sugars does your god say you can no longer even touch the box? Are you allowed to move a box of cough medicine? What about vanilla extract?

Fark all that shiat. It is your belief. If this is an issue, do what is right by your beliefs and find another job. Unless you have no nobility or honor. Then sue. Loser.

Point one - Tesco sells achohol

Point two - everybody knows it

Point three - stockboys move stock

Point three - you take a job as a stockboy in place that sells alcohol, there's a reasonable assumption that at some time, you will eventually come into contact with 100% of the store's inventory.

Point four - STFU and GBTW

Shishkani 2008-09-27 07:03:57 PM
I'm a pretty tolerant person. I don't give a damn what someone worships, whether it's Allah, or nothing. But I can't stand people who get all unhappy when their job requires them to do something 'against their religion'.

I think the responsibility here is for such people to find a job that is cool with their personal rules on the world - NOT to expect jobs to conform to them. If they can't fulfill all of the duties, not for some physical reason but because they won't, they shouldn't have taken that job. This applies to muslims stockboys getting weird about alcohol, or christians pharmacists denying sales of birth control, or even some jewish kid working as a busboy who won't clean up a pork dish.

All of you - find something you can do that won't force your personal beliefs onto other people.

koan 2008-09-27 07:04:35 PM
How about the stupid asshat adapt to the values of the country where he immigrated.

Muslim immigrants seem to be more trouble than their worth. Stick to asians, south americans or (non-muslim) africans.

fark him; this kind of bullshiat just opens the door for more. Years ago, I was office manager for a carpet sales/cleaning business. One of the salesmen blew off 2 potentially good clients because his religious convictions prevented him from stepping foot into a bar or movie theatre. He was told to GTFO for not doing what he was hired to do. As it should be.

Key word there...'claims'.

So, how many of the pharmacists simply quit their job and found another one? Oh, they went to the mainstream media and cried about the store owners not allowing them to refuse to dispense the medications or confiscate the prescription.

Personally, I think the pharmacists and the Tesco employee should be fired. I want to see all of the farkers who defended the pharmacist defend the Muslim Tesco employee. I doubt if that will happen. I just wish everyone would leave their offendable religious beliefs at the door when they report to work or go somewhere else. Farkin persecuted religious nutjobs (christian, jewish, muslim, etc.)sure do whine. Maybe they should work for Fox news as mouthpieces (er, I mean news reporters) then they can whine all they want.

THIS

Ultimately what needs to happen more often is that judges just throw these cases out and in those cases that are completely ridiculous, the presenting attorney needs to be fined for wasting the courts time and the tax payers money.

What if that pharmacist owns the business? If you own a business do you get to decide whether to carry a product or not? To me this case has nothing to do with the pharmacy issue because the pharmacists who pull that stuff ususally own their own pharmacy while this guy is a grunt who doesn't want to move some pallets.
