I'm pretty sure no one's showing up at Krispy Kreme for the diet benefits.

Man, if I was totally baked, donut+soft serve+ hot cocoa....hellllll yeah.

I don't find high sugar foodstuffs appealing since I was told that I was high risk for diabetes. My sister is type I and I was at one point grossly overweight. Now a sugar death disc is a good treat, once in a blue moon.

Sugar-free donuts don't suck as much as you might think. They're still loaded with fat though.

If they actually served GOOD frozen custard (like Culvers), then it might work.

Whipped up air milk like DQ? Not so much.

I'm baffled by how they think ice cream is going to bring in the health nuts. Are they pretending it's whole-grain ice cream or something?

I don't get all the hatred. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I don't whine and biatch about the Kroger just because they have broccoli.

I tried this at the Tacoma Mall Krispy Kreme which was, I think, the first to test run Kool Kreme. My review: They give you a hell of a lot of soft-serve for the price, but the vanilla at least, is bland and tasteless.

LUTHER THREAD

/oh, the cholesterol-manity

Doc Daneeka 2008-09-27 05:39:07 PM
Krispy Kreme doughnuts are just gross. They're sickly little things, all clammy and slimy and gross. And way, way, way too sweet. A doughnut is supposed to be cakey, with a little substance. It's not supposed to be a little air-puff that's slimy to the touch because it's coated in liquified sugar.

Over the past several years, I've been amused to witness the phenomenon of Krispy Kreme invade the Northeast, expand rapidly, and then fail spectacularly, because no one went there after the initial novelty wore off.

They were much better when they were deep fried in hog fat. Yes, I've spent time in the South. And no, not fat either.

TheFlyingGoat 2008-09-27 05:43:30 PM
Personal responsibility and snacks in moderation.

Anyway, Krispy Kreme's Original Glazed have 200 calories and 6g saturated fat. For comparison, a 16oz vanilla Frappuccino at Starbucks has 470 calories and 7g of saturated fat.

mepiget 2008-09-27 05:44:02 PM
I have never understood the appeal of Krispy Kreme donuts. They are intolerably sweet. If they were a little more on the savory side and had more depth of flavour, I could understand eating them, but, as they are, your taste buds would served just as well and your coffers far better, if you simply reached into your cupboard, pulled out a bag of confectioners sugar, and ate 10 tablespoons or so.

WalkingSnake 2008-09-27 05:44:07 PM

I'd like to see this doughnut rule book you speak of. Oh, and you don't think doughnuts should have glaze? Glazed doughtnuts aren't exactly new...

Until then, I'll keep enjoying my Krispy Kreme.

/I eat about one a month. The things are farking amazing, but I just feel bad when I at too many of them.

The purpose of the consumerist is to motivate businesses to offer better service to their customers and make better business decisions. It doesn't really matter who's in the wrong, the consumer or the service/goods provider. The other purpose of the consumerist is simply pure entertainment, purveying interesting, confusing, unusual, amusing etc news stories treating of the misadventures of capitalism for the consumption of people who don't feel like actually doing something worthwhile with themselves and instead choose to waste their lives.

It's just very interesting to me that a Farker should accuse the people over at the consumerist of not having common sense or of getting worked up over/discussing something that doesn't affect them or which they shouldn't care about.

RoyBatty 2008-09-27 05:55:06 PM
Wow. What a series of bad articles, including the one at the consumerist. If you follow all the articles through, then it's pretty clear that Krispy Kreme doesn't consider this to be healthfare, or attractive to the healthminded.

Krispy Kreme has suffered some competition to the healthy. Their solution is not to provide some healthy wheatgrassy donut but to go for even more treats and I guess, become known as the place to go after dinner for a really wonderful not-healthy treat.

Anyway, provided the ice cream is *good*, I think this is not a bad idea. Doesn't mean everyone has to eat two a day along with their lattes, just means that on the occasions I take my kids out for a donut, I could see us sharing a dipping ice cream.

Me, I like my Winchell's.

True, but you don't often drink 2-3 Frappuccino's in a sitting, and they don't come in filled or coated varieties.

Flash314 2008-09-27 06:08:47 PM
Hot now + Cold now = FTW

Truth be known, I don't like Krispy Kreme's unless they are "HOT NOW". I really don't even like doughnuts for the most part, but I could see chowing a hot doughnut with a soft serve with sprinkles. I happen by KK's when the sign is lit about once a month, and usually drop in. Nothing wrong with it!

RoyBatty:

Ah...I see... The Consumerist is like Fark.com, but for nutrition. Then why do I like Fark.com, and think the Consumerist are a bunch of pompous windbags? Oh yeah:

1). They are pompous
2). They're not funny
3). They're not really a bunch of individual jokers, they do have a health conscious mission, dictated by a blog policy that sings like a one note tune.

That said, this was a mellower post than usual. I think they've figured it out, people might have been surprised by the calorie content of a KFC meal-in-a-bowl, but no one's going to Krispy Kreme and expecting lo-cal.
