I'm hoping to get a little East Nile virus. It's a little more laid back and intellectual.

You've no idea how much animosity there is between left bank mosquitos and right bank mosquitos. Down in the Delta, there's all-out war over mosquito territory.

Remember back when humans first plodded about on the earth, and Heysuess rode a Dinosaur. To enhance the species of Man, the weak dies from disease and the strong continued to multiply until we have the computer gamer who does not multiply.

/Eh. I just got up.

What about that press release makes you think they are crying wolf? I don't remember the version of that tale where the boy calmly walks into the village and said, "Didn't see any wolves today" and because of that the villagers ignored him when something bad happened the next day.

Having taken care of a patient with nearly fatal West Nile encephalopathy once (first case in Mass in 2006), I'm quite delighted. Kick, etc.

WNV is probably woefully underdiagnosed, but it's not worth sending off blood tests for evryone with a flu-like illness if they're getting better.

Anybody can feel free to laugh at these viruses if they like. But it is a virus with no cure, and no treatment except supportive treatment.

/Kill them skeeters. Ain't nothin' work better than DEET (and removing standing water, of course).

ThatGuyOverThere 2008-09-27 02:51:36 PM
So why the fark have we been doing so much extra testing for it at The American Red Cross?

Just the .org trying to cover its ass, I'm sure.
Still no excuse for making me work hard though.

romasnavandar 2008-09-27 03:05:50 PM
I'd argue that it's because they're better training interns/residents/students at diagnosing and managing WNV. Or global warming.

/Just sayin.

My grandma died of that in '06. It was traumatizing to be a witness to two weeks of her hell.

oodja 2008-09-27 04:28:45 PM
Considering that only 1 in 150 of those bitten by an infected mosquito end up developing serious symptoms, immunity to West Nile is probably starting to reach a critical mass in the population (it's almost impossible to contract WNV twice).

pedobearapproved 2008-09-27 05:02:56 PM
I'm working on a weaponized version of WNV for next year, look out population.

Muhahahaha, I'll make you sick for a few days and you'll like it!

PBPeyronie 2008-09-27 05:09:46 PM
That's funny, I've seen 2 cases in the ICU this month.

/Getting a kick out of some of these replies.
