Oh wait, the wright brothers did come from there, and it is the home of the Wright-Patt airforce base, I guess those are important, but as a former Daytonian, I just had to laugh at that statement.

The problem with Ohio is that it is full of people who do not realize that they are allowed to leave. I knew too many people who hate Ohio who will never move to another state, especially in Dayton.

Disclaimer: I work for a company that bids for local and state government software contracts.

Governing officials and their minions are complete retards about anything technologically more advanced than a clock radio. Unfortunately, their position inevitably gives them big heads and a certain mindset and they aren't very likely to take proactive steps to improve things either because they know they aren't getting re-elected and they quit caring or they are getting re-elected and securing information isn't a talking point unless it was a news highlight at the national level recently.

We really need to erect a wall down the length of the Ohio river.

I moved to Ohio from Pennsylvania. Being able to buy beer at the corner store makes it a big step up.

The summers here are beautiful. Winters are bearable. I'm in a little piece of suburbia but not too far removed from the country nor the big city. We're not Kansas flat nor Kentucky hilly.

We have world class medical centers and some fantastic universities too.

The circus has been here twice. Come for the exotic spice of Ohio: salt, pepper.

There are a lot of negatives to living in Ohio too -- school funding, for one. Not at all fond of Cinci and every urban area has its problems.

For me, I'm happy here.

Ms.Maus 2008-09-27 01:19:26 PM
I like it here, but I live in the biggest and most socially liberal city in the state, so there's that. Most of my relatives still live in southeastern Ohio. Some of them live in trailers. Some of my extended relatives have no running water. Many never attended school past 8th grade. Others have done well for themselves and moved to Florida (yeah I know, lol.) I guess my point is there's a whole gamut of people here, from dumb hicks to big city slickers. If you don't like part of Ohio, there's bound to be a radically different city not too far away. I would say C-bus' antithesis is Lima. Ha.

As someone who has lived in Lima and been to C-Bus on numerous occasions, I'd have to say that's true.

Got the hell out of Lima as soon as I could and never plan to go back. Now live in a town that has *gasp* jobs and entertainment. Not one that shuts down at 10PM.

If living in a dying town with no jobs or social activities is what you want, then Lima is your town.

For those of you who don't know, Lima is so pathetic that they lost a Steak and Shake. The only way you know you're around Lima on I-75 is the sign "Lima. Next 3 Exits".

"Lima. It's pronounced like the bean."

I live in Columbus and I like it... Columbus is the only city that doesn't blow. It's a really normal city. Nothing spectacular but it's not crime ridden and it's a good place to raise a family... it's just very... normal.

I was born in Oxford, OH, grew up in Grove City (southwest suburb of Columbus,) have lived in Hilliard, have worked in Dublin (both northwest of Columbus,) and now live in Maineville (a remote suburb of Cincy.)

Here's my take on the whole "Ohio sucks" thing:

Columbus = a great place to live. Period. (Not everywhere, of course, but generally the metro area is better than many other cities I've spent time in.) Clean, generally safe, jobs to be had, within a short plane flight of Chicago, and the east coast.

Cincy = teh suck! I live and work outside 275, and very rarely venture into downtown. The downtown area has NOTHING for you other than the Reds and the Bengals (and really, who cares.) For any decent nightlife, you have to cross the river into KY. Maineville is..nothing (although my little island of a subdivision just east of the Little Miami isn't bad.)

Cleveland = good art museuem, decent science museum (Great Lakes Science Center), decent things to do and see, but otherwise...meh.

Northwest Ohio (including Toledo, Findlay, etc.) = Oh, hell no.

Southeast Ohio = Other than Hocking Hills and Athens, leave it to the rednecks.

Anywhere else not mentioned = whatever. Dayton is...bland like fake vanilla. The whole state is pretty much just little islands of tiny towns surrounded by farmland.

phattybeefpatty [TotalFark] 2008-09-27 09:42:50 PM
I grew up in (Akron, fack it sucks) and then moved to Cleveland and had a biatchin' great time. I ended up moving all over the country from 19 to now (28). Chicago, Charlotte (NC), all over FL, Dallas and now I reside in Bay Area, CA which is an odd stretch.

I have to say, Ohio has a backward nature about it in some parts. But I also have to say I loved the lack of PC BS being in Cleveland. There were some stupid bigots and ass backwards folks. But a lot of people that still gave a rats ass about their fellow man in a genuine sense. Not like here where they want everyone to be happy and healthy but have no real idea how to do it or make it happen but they just love that feeling of feeling good with no results.

Cheers Cleveland, I miss your weirdness and pass crazy drug and alcohol based stories around the world in your honor.

matt the cat 2008-09-28 12:09:05 AM
Northeast Ohio is actually a great place to live. I'm about equidistant from Pittsburg and Cleveland, two thriving metro areas; 45 min from Lake Erie (ever heard of walleye?, sandy beaches/clean water, Cedar Point); caves, state parks all over the place.
And I don't have to sit and wait in traffic like East coast/West coasters. 10 hrs to Myrtle Beach. People will biatch but they'd probably rather be doin lame shiite anyway. Farking gamers, bloggers, texters, watching BS reality shows... Go do something real for a change.

The problem isn't Ohio.

The problem is government open access laws. A lot of states have various sunshine laws that require them to post ALL gov't documents for the public.

What they don't realize/remember is... There's a lot of crap that the public doesn't need to know.

Like peoples bank account numbers and social security numbers from divorce cases or speeding tickets. Or the addresses of half way houses for battered women.

Or the street address of my dynamite magazine, the haul route between it and the site I blast at, and the time I typically access it.

Darkridr 2008-09-29 07:19:04 PM
beferny: I live in Columbus and I like it... Columbus is the only city that doesn't blow. It's a really normal city. Nothing spectacular but it's not crime ridden and it's a good place to raise a family... it's just very... normal.

Another central Ohioan here, and having traveled to several other cities, I can say that Columbus isn't bad at all. My only current problem is that I live just outside of it, so we get all the effects of the city government but can't vote for it. Housing is still on the decent side of affordable and entertainment is to be had but you will need a car unless you REALLY like long bus rides. The streets are laid out logically through the city (very few curvy messes) and the interstate bisects the city pretty nicely so you can get anywhere without going EVERYWHERE (looking at you Pittsburgh metro area).
