Yeah, just try to disagree with the author.

Those "styles" look really really bad.

I love the oversized vintage glasses. On someone cute, they look good. However, this trend is two years past its sell-by date now. I can go for big shoes and occasionally a hipster mullet though (OK, it's probably hideous, but someone Tegan & Sara can pull them off.)

Ironic mustaches must go, same with the stupid headband.

Worst slideshow ever. Pixelated photos should be #8.

Reebok high-tops are a hipster style?! This is great. I went through several pairs of Reebok high-tops in the *80's*....and that's mostly because MacGyver looked cool in them.

I think I saw acid wash jeans in that slideshow

Seems like a good time to dig this old one (new window) up. Enjoy.

They missed skinny jeans on guys.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-09-27 09:51:57 AM
The faux hawk is worse than all of them combined. At least people who sport mullets embrace their inner redneck. Nothing says douchebag like a faux hawk.

dugitman: Smug hipster captions slideshow on hipster faux pas.

I was going to say that the author sounded like a bit of hipster herself. Every time she wrote a sentence she had to add parentheses (AMIRITE?) to preempt whatever thought you might form about the content.

jaylectricity [TotalFark] 2008-09-27 10:35:30 AM
She was right about Will Smith though. He could pull off anything on that show. No matter how ridiculous it was.

So, I'm getting old and shiat, which allows me to complain about the kids on my lawn. So I was at a DBT show over the weekend, and this dude walks in with a sort-of mohawk, Misfits shirt, black skinny jeans, Docs, biker belt, wallet chain, and safety pin piercings. It occured to me that I had been seeing that exact same look on "non-conformist" punks since the mid-'80s. And I don't just mean "look" in general; I mean the specific elements down to that same Misfits shirt. I hope Danzig is getting a cut of all those. The Yankees haven't had the same uniform for as long as these guys.

So I was telling my mom about the show, and she says that she was seeing almost exactly the same outfit in Manhattan in the late '70s (sub a Sex Pistols shirt for the Misfits).

Normally, I don't much care what the kids wear; I'm quite sure I don't know what's cool now even if I ever did. But what does this 30-year-old uniform even mean anymore? Is it still an expression of nihilism in response to '70s Labour Britain? Is it a flip-off to an early-'80s NYC awash in crime and decay? Is it more than a costume for a doctrinaire and rigid brand of rebellion?

Add pretty much anything that was recognized as horrible in the eighties and yet is being trotted out again now.

I'm lookin' at you, bubble skirts.

I'd also like to add hobo bags/purses, particularly the kind that look like a recycled Hell's Angel. Got-damn they are ugly and sure proof that the owner is a fool soon parted from her money by fashion designers. Although hipsters don't really carry those so much as hopeless office twats whose previous handbag was a fake Louis Vuitton.

Grow a good, manly, Magnum P.I. 'stache, just not some weedy, non-committal pubescent thing.

Say what you want, Ive met some very attractive hipster girls. Best part? They're not high maintenance, and they're not like real people so when you leave hem with no warning it's not like they have feelings to hurt.

So is that a hipster writing style? Because it is really farking awful, and hello, completely stupid.

The only thing worse than that fashion is her journalism.

Yes I did.

So true, so true. I am fast careening toward the 40 mark, and recall the punk/goth look of the 80's (I was one of them) and I too find it odd that the look I co-opted from the late 70's is still going strong, and being sported in almost exactly the same way that it was almost 20 years ago.

No, I don't still dress that way. Heh.

The same thing has occurred to me too. I know one thing for sure, it can't mean the same thing now as it did 30 years ago. I've come to think of these "nihilists" as reenactors. When I see them, I think to myself: "Yes, you're spot on. That is very accurate!"

NO, what you need is some ironic muttonchops. Pair muttonchops with a hipster wardrobe, and it says "I'm trendy, but look! Muttonchops! I bet it's been a while since you saw those!"

Unless I'm at work or at a funeral or something, I've been wearing the same thing for about 30 years now -- plain (usually grey) t-shirt or sweatshirt, depending on the season. Jeans. Whichever brand of tennis shoes that were on sale at Kohl's a couple months ago. Showered, shaved (except Sundays,) anti-perspiranted, unscented.

I'm comfortable, which is my only motive.

And completely invisible. It's so generic that it's never been in fashion, or out of fashion, as far as I can tell. Neither cool nor lame.

Flash314 2008-09-27 12:23:24 PM
I'm just glad my black t-shirt and Levi's weren't listed. Been wearing this style since the 80's, wondering if anyone is going to tell me how outdated I look.
