Subby here. I don't ever submit links, but...

I was looking for a video of Bach's Prelude No. 1 from the Well-Tempered Klavier to show to one of my piano students who's working on the piece, and came across this.

Holy crap! Amazing.

Well, It's not Gould, but it's as good as Gould.

I'm actually impressed that you got the reference and laughed at it. And you get about +57 respect points for getting it.

MUSIC NERD!

Even ugly musicians get laid as much as athletes. If not more.

Well sure, anyone can play it if they get to use two guitars.

That music has no soul. His face is expressionless, as if he were performing a task at work.

Good, I guess, but how is this going to help him manufacture affordable consumer grade electronics for US import?

It was mechanical with little emotion. The timing of his little finger on the 2nd guitar was off a little as compared to everything else he was doing.

I would prefer to hear an original work of his that.....awww, fark it. I can't do that.

Very, very well played. Good discipline and attention to detail. And since he's still a kid doing it, a shiatload of natural talent.

MatrixOutsider: That music has no soul. His face is expressionless, as if he were performing a task at work.

I agree. I mean, it's technically brilliant, but it lacks passion. Even Lang Lang, the brilliant pianist that he is, looks like a burnt-out construction worker from the neck up when he plays piano. Put in a Jon Kimura Parker, Lief Ove-Andsnes or Jamey Strawn and watch those guys destroy the piano with a smile, grimace, tear and a scream all in five seconds. Much more entertaining.

That said, Bach is not the most emotional music. It's an exercise in technical brilliance, but lacks the passion of the Beethovens, Chopins, Rachmaninoffs or Tchaikovskys.

Bach lacks passion? I could point out that he wrote two passions, but that would be too easy and in poor taste. If you want one small example, listen to the cum sancto spiritu from his b minor mass.

I watched about three minutes of that totally mesmerized by his shoulder pads. Besides, I prefer to hear Zack playing the chocobo theme or check out this guy playing the Zelda theme on an 11-string bass (both new windows).

/it was time for video game music

This. Whilst I've no doubt technically quite hard (but not really much harder than playing it on a piano), and no, I couldn't do it, but c'mon, from a purely musical its fairly horrible. The tempo wanders way to much, and the two instruments are frequently out of time, and the tone, phrasing and articulation pretty much suck. 6/10 for technical prowess, 9/10 for novelty value, 0/10 for artistic merit.
