This only looks like a mistake. It is really just the media pressuring the weather service to come up with cooler names for hurricanes. It makes for a better headline:

"Hurricane Ice Kills 29"

Or...

"Hurricane Crusher Headed For West Texas"

See?

/Or someone wanted to leave early for the weekend and didn't pay attention while running the spellchecker.

I don't know why they're not being very forthcoming with the death numbers. It's pretty apparent that more than 69 people will be dead as a result of this storm, especially as pre-storm estimates were that 30% of the 11,000 residents on the Bolivar Peninsula (seen that picture with the single house standing?) stayed behind.

I really liked going to the beaches on Bolivar. Don't think I'll get to for a while though.

Story is sad. Headline is amusing. Musta been a tough decision for which tag to use.

In any case... 29 people may be sad. But that's nothing compared to Haiti. I don't even know what the final toll was there. But they are lucky they still have a farking island. (Not just from Ike.)

Having seen the helicopters landing by Rice stadium to deliver bodies as well as the ambulance convoys that aren't transporting out living bodies...the death toll is much, much closer to 500 for Galveston alone and, even then, only for the ones they've found.

I can't fathom why they aren't more forthcoming, either, because I know I'm not the only person who has seen more than 29 bodies in one sitting.

olddinosaur 2008-09-26 09:12:33 PM
On October 2, 2002, I cruised through the Galveston/Bolivar area, headed east on my way to Florida.

Bolivar Island struck me as very pretty, but I also remember how close the houses were to the water; one other thing sticks out in my mind is the way the road abruptly ends where it turns north. There is a big barricade across the road where it used to hug the coast, but a hurricane washed it out some years ago.

The following day I was stuck in Orange Texas with a busted motorcycle but there was no way to fix it: Hurricane Lili was bearing up, and all the mechanics were nailing up plywood or headed for higher ground.

I sat in the hotel for five days, bored out of my mind and watching TV 15 hours a day; reporters were standing in the middle of Bourbon Street with ten-foot sections of PVC pipe, to illustrate where the water would come to if the levee broke.

Talk about deja vu!

Last week I saw some aerial photos of the MacDonald's in Galveston where I stopped for coffee before riding the Bolivar Ferry. The building is still standing, but the parking lot is about half washed away.

That parking lot was 300 feet inland, and 18 feet off the ground.

olddinosaur 2008-09-26 09:13:43 PM
CORRECTION: I should have said, "---18 feet above sea level."

My bad.

I also thought it might have been Immigration and Customs Enforcement. And yeah, there have been rumors of massive body counts that haven't seen any news agency. Makes you wonder if there's some sort of cover-up going on, and if so, why?

The Houston Comical also contains a headline today which references "Auguts Wilson." All this time I've been spelling it wrong. You know, July, Auguts, September...

Somebody's sleeping on the job over at the Comical today. Hey, the articles are filled with misinformation, why should we expect the headlines to reflect any accuracy? Par for the course.

Why would you waste a helicopter on a corpse? It's not like they're in a hurry anymore.

Uh...disease, odor, the fact that they attract predators? Helicopters have access to areas where land vehicles can't go; furthermore, there are laws about who can move a corpse, the qualifications they must have in order to do so, and the safety equipment they must use. Our tax dollars pay for the medical personnel and the equipment inside those choppers, as well as for the choppers themselves. I don't see victim recovery as any sort of "waste."

Please don't forget that that these are real people, with real families and real loved ones. You're perfectly free to be as crass and callous as you want, but it doesn't change the fact that each and every one of those corpses was a friend and neighbor to someone.

I guess if it were your mother, you'd prefer they strap her to the hood of a truck and drive two hours in the hot Texas sun to the nearest usable morgue? Just because someone is dead doesn't mean their body deserves to be treated without dignity.
