I still don't quite get how the plant can close and all the parts shipped to China where a new plant will make different kinds of TVs is somehow contrary to what the Obama ad states.

If Corning had wanted (or had financial incentive) to keep those jobs in America the plant would have retooled. If there as no need for the product they were making, the plant would have closed.

Plant closes and someone else uses some of the parts of that plant to make different TVs in China does, indeed, sound like those people's jobs got exported to China.

If Ford closed a plant that made Excursions and sent most of the line parts to China, do you think "b-b-but they don't make Excursions at the new plant in China! They make Escapes!" is much of a soundbite?

Am I missing something here?

Bill_Wick's_Friend: Am I missing something here?

Yes.

What you're missing is that analytical thinking of that complexity is completely beyond McCain's base. They're not going to be able to understand most of the vocabulary in your post, let alone the logical connections.

I will paraphrase the quote we'll get from the few usual suspects who will actually see/acknowledge that your post is even there:

Corvus 2008-09-26 07:56:34 PM
FTFA:The ad's facts themselves are true, but are presented out of context so that the underlining message is misleading. Corning closed a plant, and a business altogether and we know longer make CRTs. Yes the parts were taken down and sold to a manufacturer in China, but we have learned that the company lost funding and those parts have never been used to create more CRTs or jobs.

Oh so the jobs were being shipped to China but the company in China went belly up so that makes it ok!

McCain: Only shipping your jobs away to China and having them fail there!

Yes, if you think only McCain uses deceitful advertising. All politicians do.

captain_heroic44 2008-09-26 08:00:11 PM
Nice try. But everything the ad says is true. They disassembled the plant and moved it to China. The tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas no doubt factored into the decision to move it to China.

Did you read at the bottom of the article where someone from the Brookings Institute said that tax burden rarely plays a large role in a company's decision to outsource? Of course you didn't cause that would make your argument moot.

Yes, because God forbid people have a decent home to live in.

Tell me again, who turned these mortgages into securities? Who couldn't be happy for people that were owning a home for the first time, and had to stick their greedy farking hands into the pot of homeownership to try and make money?

Oh, thats right.....Wall Street.

Which political manager took money from Freddie and/or Fanny?

And which political party usually helps Wall Street?

Care to do a tally of factcheck.org and then weight it for severity? A large chunk is about McCain and a small portion is Obama. Obama's tend to be hyperbole or misdirection. McCain tends to be misdirection or outright falsehoods.

I like Obama as much as any other Masshole, but the article has a point. Plant A closes down because of obsolete tech, and sells off remaining inventory/equipment to a buyer. That buyer just happens to be in China. That's all this is.

For the guy claiming the plant should retool to keep jobs, maybe you don't know the difference between CRT's and LCD's. Apples and oranges. And even if Corning is in the LCD business, who is to say that don't already have enough LCD plants? Perhaps it just makes more sense to close down an unprofitable plant instead of retooling it to make something else they already have enough of.

By making the connection between equipment being shipped overseas vs. jobs being shipped. Would you rather Corning continued to make CRTs that no one will buy just so that some folks can keep their jobs?

The fact that you have to make the distinction between Obama using hyperbole and misdirection vs. outright lies is funny to me.

Show me the outright lies. Please. I live to debunk them.

Were the parts sent to an new factory location in China, or sold to a different company in China?

Because if Corning owns the new factory in China, I'd call it job-shifting. If not (and that's kind of what I'm getting from the "Corning doesn't make CRT's anymore" bit), then it's just Corning moving on.

There is not enough factual information in their article to come to a clear conclusion on the matter.

Ahhh, I see. So you missed this part of the article:

But the cathode ray tube is a dying technology, and Corning no longer makes it.

So you would have them continue to make a product on a line that they are discontinuing because you feel in your expert opinion and research that there is a big market for this product that they no longer make.

So you think they shipped all the machinery all across the world just to throw it away?

I think most reasonable people can figure they shipped the machinery to use in production.

And if it's another company it doesn't matter, that's how many companies outsource, they have other companies in China make it so they keep their fingers clean from child labor and sweet shops and prison labor.

Because the article doesn't say whether or not Corning sent the equipment to themselves. Corning stopped making the CRTs in the US and shipped the equipment overseas. It did not ship jobs that would otherwise be held here overseas. You can't ship something that does not exist any longer. If Corning had said "We shipped this equipment overseas to our Chinese manufacturing plant" then you would have a point.

My previous statement was to show that I didn't know if Corning sent the stuff to themselves. Now that I reread the article and the statement from the Corning rep, I can say that they weren't.

I never sold TVs for a few years.... Just because it doesn't bring in the millions of dollars doesn't mean people still don't want it.

CRT are bulky and I personally hate them but people are still requesting them and buying them up like hot pancakes.

Link (new window)Thanks to this shiat ass company I see why a lot of people bailed on CRT in the first place. They sold $99 dollar TVs that aren't worth the box they are placed in.

Finally, Sumsung-Corning (50% owned) produces cathode-ray-tubes for conventional televisions. Corning's holdings in these joint-ventures contributed substantially to Corning's earnings in FY 2006. Although their revenue is added to the company's financial results they produced an addition $960M in additional earnings.

So is it Sumsung or Corning that is making these CRTs? Just because I have 50% holdings in a nail salon does not mean that I myself do manicures and pedicures. It simply means that I have a financial stake in the company.
