He'd better be careful while he's farking them, lest some paint get on his scrotum, giving him a well-known painful condition.

Not sure how this make him an idiot, subby, though the headline does bring into question your reading comprehension skills. He dyed them blue, not so he could "recognise them more easily", but so he could tell them apart and know which females had been, um, serviced.

Most sheep I've seen have had some spray-markings on them, of one kind or another.

What's the phrase safe sex mean to a New Zealand farmer?
That you clearly mark the sheep that like to bite or kick.

You wouldn't normally dye the whole sheep, though.

You fail. In logic what you are doing is called drawing a distinction without a difference. Thee farmer is painting some sheep blue to draw a distinction because there is a difference. Which is exactly what "recognize more easily" means.

If telling something apart doesn't allow you to recognize something more easily, I don't understand any English.

GavinTheAlmighty 2008-09-26 07:24:58 PM
It is very common among sheep farmers to dye or "paint" them for differentiation purposes, especially if two sheep farmers have adjacent properties.

Good thing subby is around to call out farmers for not knowing what they are doing. Subby must know best.

I'm sure the sheep don't mind. Being painted blue means you're gettin' some from the lady sheeps.

Plus, it's only idiotic if the paint doesn't wash easily out of the wool when it's processed. Then Farmer Jones can be labeled an idiot, subby.

Well if you're dying the male, (which is what he was doing, if you're too dumb to read, just look at the pic) it might just be easier to spray them down than to try to get just the the underbelly and the genital area...

Sorry subby got it wrong, this guy is actually pretty smart.
Just because he's a sheep herder doesn't make him an idiot. (bet he's happier than most of us on any given day)

"Moo moo moo bah bah bah, Moo moo moo bah bah bah!!!"
"Whaddayall mean Bah bah bah?"
"Sheeeeeeep ya dern fool!"

No he actually dyed all of the male sheep so they would leave blue marks on the ewes after they got done humping...

Why is he an idiot? You don't dye your sheep?

You city-dwellers sure are funny.

Funny weird, not funny ha ha.

FunkOut [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 08:10:48 PM
They're just supposed to put a special vest on the males that has dye which will rub off onto the females' backs while the male is breeding them. Females with a stripe of dye on their lower back have been "tupped". Sounds like this farmer was too cheap to buy the marking vests.

Normally the male has a blue chalk pack on his belly, and leaves blue spots on the backs of his lovely ladies. If you've ever been near a sheep farm in the spring, you'll usually see a ton of sheep with blue patches on their backs... love is in the air, I guess. How the fark these sheep turned into smurfs like that is beyond me, though. Maybe his dye pack exploded or something. They look hilarious. Like floofy blueberry sheepies.

lordargent 2008-09-26 08:24:48 PM
worlddan: If telling something apart doesn't allow you to recognize something more easily, I don't understand any English.

The headline, as submitted, needs clarification.

The headline says that the farmer is dying the sheep to 'recognize them more easily' but makes no mention of impregnation.

Hence, we're left to assume what's going on. Is he dying the sheep to 'recognize them more easily' from other farmers sheep. (or, even worse, dying them to recognize that they're sheep, and not goats, or sheep dogs, or what not.) The headline is lacking a critical piece of information.

And in that context, what timujin said is perfectly cromulent and raises an important question. Why is the farmer an idiot for dying his sheep?

I do not like it, Fail-I-Am

kellynoel [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 08:35:12 PM
I don't really understand why this is such a bad idea.

Unless you count that the wool will shrivel up when washed.

Ral 2008-09-26 09:34:59 PM
I don't think the ram was wearing a vest or a dye pack. The females are too uniformly marked. The farmer probably marked the females himself after observing that they had been serviced by the male. Then once they mix back into the flock, he can keep track of the ones that were mated.

He has to know which one are 'in lamb' to avoid any cross species interbreeding. Safe sheep sex?
