This isn't new, McCain has been in reaction mode for weeks.

All he needs is a personal tragedy or a terrorist act and he's back in... for a day or two.

McCain's campaign outright admitted last June that a terrorist attack would be a big help for them. Good ol' Charlie Black, telling it like is.

McCain did all this to "Save the Nation(tm)" and has zero to show for it. No agreement reached. He's not even leading the discussion.

The media were reporting that he didn't really say anything yesterday during the meeting...

If that's true, then this whole little dog and pony show of McCain's has been a colossal flop.

And, Obama was attended by his legislative aide. McCain was attended by a campaign aide. Telling, no?

Code_Archeologist [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 03:18:51 PM
His whole point of being there was to show support to an asinine House Republican counter offer that the Bernanke and others say would be disastrous. And rather than trying to step in to moderate the debate he stayed there silent and let the people from his party stridently refuse to negotiate.

Something has to be done for this... the illiquidity of the credit market is not going to go away on its own without some capital to back it up. And there is nobody in the private sector willing or able to swallow the hundreds of billions of risk involved in kick starting the credit market.

It's like that feeling you get when you're playing chess and you've gotten yourself into a position where you really only have one move that doesn't put you in check... You can stare at the board as long as you want and kick yourself in the head for the previous 3 or 4 moves you've made, but at the end of the day, you still only have one move.

I have a relative who is a CPA, and this is his plan:

Go over the 2006 tax returns, and give 50% of everyone's taxes paid that year back to the taxpayer, or $500, whichever is more.

The rich people getting their money back will likely stash most of it into banks, giving banks the money necessary to do their business.

The middle-class and poor might save some as well, but they'll spend a good chunk of it on bills and some with just have fun with it, thus injecting money into the economy. Eventually a good chunk of that money will be put into banks as well.

The banks that people trust will get more business. The banks that farked themselves will die off.

Not a perfect plan, but a plan that will certainly be more palatable to the public.

What "fact" in the article are you referring to? Its about the opinion of one guy, from a biased outlet. If the NRO had an opinion piece on Obama, I'd react the same way.

Of course he didn't say much. When it flops, he can blame either Bush and talk about how much different he'll be, or he'll blame Obama and talk about how the Dems can't be trusted in this time of crisis. If it passes, he can take all the credit for not interfering and trusting those around him to do their jobs, which is why he'd make such a great president.

Come on man, it's political spin 101.

Don't think he's on the unpopular side of this bailout. Joe Sixpack doesn't like it. And McCain knows it. But he also knows in the short term between now and the election that a crash could hurt him people lost money and jobs in a hurry. Both candidates hate this. Neither of them want to vote for it. This is going to be a Kabuki dance around a landmine for both of them. People are nervous and feel like they are being robbed at gunpoint.

Anyone who can seem like he's going to stand between you and the wolves at the door will win this election

This is true.

It's sad since the time for action was months ago and neither of them (nor anyone else who had authority) did jack.

I agree with the bailouts for myself, but think the banks should fail for historical sake since we would learn a painful lesson.

I'll stick with what prevents me from selling apples (or my ass) on the streetcorner for food.

Joe sixpack hates it and so do I (Joe twelvepack) but it needs to be done. I'm pissed as anyone should be that we have to fix a mess made by two groups, stupid borrowers adn greedy lenders. Clark Howard has been saying for a long time that the policies of the past 7 years and the encouragement to go out and shop was bad advice. He went off on a rant today and I don't blame him. Why weren't there more regulations here? We are bringing the econmy back to what it was before the great depression.

Well, HuffPo IS quoting from someone who rather abruptly got thrown on their ass from McCain for involvement in 527's, so I guess a little bitterness would be appropriate.
