It was good, topical, funny, interesting, and scathing all at once the other night, Dave, but that night is over.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 02:26:41 PM
I think part of the sting comes from the fact that McCain announced his candidacy on Letterman.

That, and McCain owed a more honest excuse than "I'm washing my hair."

He will get over it. Well he should at least.

Wow. Letterman was funny night of, but he just sounds like a whiny emo biatch now.

Gunny Highway: He will get over it. Well he should at least.

Hell, no. He can milk this throughout the rest of the campaign, at least.

Part of Letterman's charm is that he can't let anything go. Hell hath no fury like a Letterman scorned.

Letterman can't let a topic go? I'm shocked, he's only been doing this for how long?

Anyone complaining about this fact can't have possibly watched letterman more than once.

Thats some great free publicity McCain landed with that there maneuver. I wonder how long Letterman is gonna run with this?

At least McCain didn't show up and flash a pair of deformed implanted breasts at him like Courtney Love.

Letterman seems like the type to nurse a grudge as though if were the world's cutest orphaned kitten.

Say what you will about McCain lately but I believe this is the stupidest thing he has ever done. Letterman would have just made fun for a while then let it go so he could get McCain on again. Now he feels dissed so for the rest of the election Its going to be McCain jokes.

Don't give late night comics material. That should be the first rule.

maldinero 2008-09-26 04:49:23 PM
I liked when he told Paris Hilton, regarding the premise of her new reality TV show, "this kind of stuff is why the rest of the world hates us," or something to that effect.

Especially a comedian whose wheel house is repeated jokes ran into the ground to death way past funny until it circles back around into funny, back out of funny, and back into funny again.

You are David Letterman, someone slightly funnier than Leno, but not as funny as Conan. Get over yourself. It is not like your industry (tv talker funny shows) have been telling many jokes about Obama anyway.

Way to beat that dead horse.

He made a choice on which appearance to honor. And he lied to the host he dissed. Speaks to judgement. Who's going to get more mileage out of the appearance - Letterman or Couric? And whose audience is larger and more loyal?

I'll admit Couric's got a nicer set of legs than Dave, but McCain couldn't have screwed the pooch harder on this one if he had tried.

The point was that McCain said he was going to Washington when he was really going to an interview with Katie Couric on the SAME NETWORK.

It's sort of a lose-lose for McCain, since he put himself in his current situation. If he goes on Letterman, he'll be mocked for missing the debate but showing up for Letterman. If he doesn't go on Letterman, the host whines for two consecutive shows.

I don't think McCain is really worried about Letterman's political clout, though. I don't think anyone who was undecided will vote based on him not attending Letterman.

Letterman is far from edgy...well until after Mccain canceled on him. Now he's funnier than he's been in ten years. PS letterman had been supporting mccain up until Mccain made it personal. Dun dun dun...

Hobodeluxe [TotalFark] 2008-09-26 04:59:15 PM
funny how missing Letterman was the only change from suspending the campaign and not suspending the campaign. otherwise it was business as usual. Obama "suspended" his campaign as much as John did. Actually spent more time in Washington than John did and managed not to act like an attention ho drama queen.

Global Citizen: david letterman beating a joke to death relentlessly? well i'll be...

That's what I actually like about him. Part of the the humor is that his jokes get old, and then the joke becomes that he tells terrible jokes. I don't know if that makes sense.

If you watch Norm Macdonald at Bob Sagets roast on comedy central, you'll see what I mean. His whole roast was one terrible joke after another. The first few, people were quiet. The next two or three, people were looking at each other going "WTF?". Once people caught on, he was killing them. I was laughing my arse off.

Letterman is sort of like that for me. He tells a joke over and over and over. The first time, it's funny. The second, third, fourt and fifth, it's terrible. But then he just keeps going KNOWING it's crappy and for some reason that's funny to me.

Recall how many months he milked Buttafuoco. He was making Buttfuoco (sp?) jokes long after the media had forgotten about him. And don't forget Boutros Boutros Ghali (sp?).

Shenanigans. I've never heard Letterman publicly endorse any candidate or party.

He couldh have said he's cancelling because he has an interview at CBS news that he feels is important given the economy is "cratering". I think Dave would have been more understanding. Would have have called him for it? Sure, but it would have been good natured stuff rather than the shock he obviously wasn't able to hide.

So far as political clout. It's the brand. Politicians, ultimately, are products. As much as we pretend we don't pay attention to stuff besides the issues, we form opinions based on more guts than logic. A constant ribbing (and reporting on the ribbing) on a popular show with a well-liked host is going to hurt the brand. Look at Tom Cruise. He was Mr. Box Office before he jumped on Oprah's couch and berated a glib anchor. All of a sudden it's like the guy has leprosy. The same will happen to McCain among younger independents.

As a matter of fact, it seems that was the last straw for a classmate of mine that is a frustrated republican. Something to the effect of, "I can't watch him futz up one more time", the Palin interview got him started on thinking about voting Obama. The "suspended the campaign" thing pissed him off enough to start to consider it. But the huge, incredibly dumb clusterfark that is pissing off Letterman was the last straw for him. He doesn't care what Letterman thinks, he just cares that it was a monumentally stupid thing to do for somebody who aspires to be leader of the free world.

He's going to milk this for weeks.

His first joke was hilarious. Talked about David Blaine's latest stunt. "they strung him up on some chains upside down, and just LEFT HIM HANGING THERE. THEY LEFT HIM HANGING FOR HOURS!!!". I loved it.

So, his choice for president changed based on McCain not coming to an interview for a lame ass variety show? There's a stalwart supporter.

All McCain had to do was NOT LIE. Why did he feel the need to lie? It was stupid, and Letterman should point that out to his viewers as much as possible.

McCain flat out lied when he had no reason to.
